You have been assigned as the team leader for a group project to update the current HR vacation and sick leave policies. Your five-member team has 6 months to complete the task and present a recommendation to the management team of the organization. Your immediate role is to organize and assign each team member with his or her specific assignments to accomplish the project. Describe the steps to creating an implementation strategy for your team.

Write a minimum 5-page plan, addressing the following:

Likewise, the culture of an organization can either help or hinder project success. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of different project management structures, how organizational culture affects those structures, and selecting the right structure for the project help the project manager start with a solid foundation for project success.

Starting a course in statistics may trigger many questions, some of which could be the following:

• Why am I learning about statistics?
• Do I need to be a math expert to understand statistics?
• I never needed it before, why would the future be any different?

5. In the section about cancer, read through that and for this answer, summarize the mechanism of cancerous cells. In other words, how does cancer kill?

6. From Figure 8.8, page 316, write four separate sentences that describe any of the information seen in the graph. For example, you could say that, about 15% or less of the population has diabetes. Be sure each sentence is a separate idea.

7. First read through the section on Sleep, and then look up and watch a YouTube video on Sleep During Middle Age, and summarize what you learn for this answer.

8. Check out the graph in Figure 8.18 and on the right side, notice the six categories of mental functioning/cognitive abilities. Which one ends up dropping off the most? Then for each category, look it up and write a definition of it for this answer.

Ch. 9 Late Adulthood

1. Check out Table 9.2 on page 372. For this answer, convert the information on this Table to graph form, much like the one from Ch. 8 on page 330, titled Figure 8.18 Seattle Longitudinal Study ages 25 to 88. Hint: The x-axis could be labeled ‘Year’.

2. Use the information on page 373, and answer the question, What do you think the lady in Figure 9.1 is thinking about? And don’t say, I don’t know. Be creative, thoughtful and make sure your answer is sensible coming from an older person.

3. Read through the paragraphs in the section titled Gender Differences in Life Expectancy. Then summarize the two explanations. Then also answer, which of these two explanations do you think will be the cause of your own death, many years from now? Be introspective, curious, and make sure your answer is based on your lifestyle.

4. Read through the Cellular Clock Theory of aging, and then look up and watch a YouTube video on the subject. Summarize all that for this answer.

5. Read the section on Physical Changes of Aging. Then draw two pictures. One is of your face now, and the other is your face when you are 80 years old.

6. Summarize the paragraph titled Heart Disease in the section titled Chronic Conditions. Then look up a YouTube video on ‘Stroke vs. Heart Attack’, and summarize what you learn from it.

7. There is a program for older folks that will help them keep their brain sharp. It is called ACTIVE
(Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly). Watch a YouTube video on it, and then come up with your own activity for older folks to help keep their brain in top condition for someone their age. For example, some kind of program where they learn to help care for large animals.

8. Read through and summarize the section titled Prospective Memory. Then make two short lists of things you need to remember to do, one titled Time-based prospective memories, and the other called Event-based prospective memories.

Ch. 10 – Death and Dying

1. Summarize the meaning of Social Death, and then come up with three of your own Rescue Therapies that would help people with this condition feel better about being alive, and maintaining a good attitude.

2. Read through the eight types of Developmental Perceptions of Death and Death Anxiety on pages 448-449. Then explain your sense of what death means in terms of yourself and others/loved ones.

3. Read through the section on Palliative Care, and then look up and watch a YouTube video on ‘Palliative care for family members’, and summarize what you learned for this answer.

4. After reading the section titled Euthanasia, describe if you think it is okay for people to choose this for themselves if…
a) they have a terminal disease, b) they are severely depressed, and c) they think the afterlife will be fun/cool/interesting.

5. For each of the Five Stages of Grief, make up a quote from an imaginary dying person who is in this Stage. You’ll have five quotes for this answer.

6. Look up a YouTube video on Green Burials, and in addition to summarizing what you learn, provide your opinion on the subject.

Scenario:

Danny Meyer Leads His Company Through the Challenges of Eliminating Tips

What happens when your CEO wants to remove the tip structure from your restaurant? Do you complain about the new prices as a customer? Do you worry about your paychecks as a server?

Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality (home to some of the most successful New York restaurants), discovered these answers when he began eliminating the tip structure in most of his restaurants. He had seen firsthand the largest negative impact of a tipping culture: employees stuck in frontline positions with no chance to advance to management positions without taking significant pay cuts.

Meyer began by first involving the affected employees in town hall talks. These town halls happened months before any publicity was released. Meyer then hosted town halls with customers to explain the importance of fair wages for all of his employees at the restaurant, not just the few who served the food. The transition period for each restaurant to eliminate tips was usually 3–6 months.

As a result of eliminating the tip structure in most of his restaurants, Meyer has been able to increase the pay structure for cooks at those locations, which enables him to fill more cook positions and address a common industry shortage. Meyer has also been able to hire employees with a purpose: to deliver exceptional hospitality. Meyer encourages his employees to take care of each other first and to then take care of the customer, which creates a virtuous cycle of hospitality.

Meyer constantly uses feedback from his employees, even after the tip structure was eliminated. He wants to ensure that each employee feels that his or her voice is heard and understood. Employees continue to have access to town hall meetings and internal feedback channels to offer honest feedback.

The oceans are filled with single-use plastics like water bottles swirled into large patches—some big enough to form islands that you could walk on! Fish and marine life think the plastic is food and eat the plastic that chokes them to death (Center for Biological Diversity, n.d.). You are the regional sales manager for a large pharmaceutical company. Your company is hiring a district sales manager in your region. There are three applicants for this position:

• A male, 62 years of age, with 40 years of experience
• A female, 47 years of age, with 20 years of experience, who is a paraplegic
• A female, 22 years of age, who is a new college graduate

The hiring manager does not want to consider the 62-year-old male because he does not believe he will be able to put forth enough effort at his age. He also does not want to consider the 47-year-old female because he believes her appearance will cause potential customers to not buy their product. He would like to hire the 22-year-old female even though she has no experience because he feels that their clients will be more receptive to her appearance and age.

You are concerned about the process the hiring manager used. The hiring manager’s recommendation raises ethical issues and may cause the company legal problems.

Your group has been asked to create an employee development program to deal with this type of issue.

Individual Portion

Each group member will write a paper discussing his or her experience working on the group project and how the group went through the stages of team development.

Projects of all sizes may seem daunting at first. Breaking the project down into smaller, more manageable pieces allows you to develop an achievable plan for completing the project. The work breakdown structure (WBS) is one of the tools that you can use to outline your project into smaller, more manageable pieces called work packages.

Refer to Case 4.1 of your text. In this case, Brandon has been chosen to chair the 5K charity run for his fraternity, and you are presented with the details of this project. In a 5-page report, you should address the following:

• How would developing a WBS help to alleviate Brandon’s problems during the initial meeting? How can the WBS be used to organize and plan the project?
• Describe the process for creating the WBS.
• Create a list of the major deliverables for this project, and use them to develop a draft WBS with at least 3 levels of detail.
