Student A’s post: “When I was a senior at Mariner High School, I wanted to start a change initiative where the high schools in my school district could start later in the day. In my school district, high schools started at 7:20 AM. I wanted to instead push a proposal where high schools could start at 9:20 AM. My reasoning for this proposed change was so that the students at my high school could get sufficient sleep as well as be able to focus more during school lectures. I wrote my proposal in the form of an email and sent it to my principal. A day later, I received a response from my principal. In the email, my principal commended me for being passionate about the well-being of the students at Mariner High School. However, he told me that my proposal will not be accepted because if the school schedule was pushed later by two hours, then after-school activities would be pushed to later times as well. This means that if my change initiative was implemented, then the sports games that are hosted in the school district would have to end at 10 pm, instead of normally ending at 8 pm. The principal then proceeded to tell me in the email that he would send my proposal to the Mukilteo School District but also said that it would be unlikely that the school district will accept my proposal. I was disappointed with the response email but was fully aware of the reasons why my change initiative wouldn’t work. After accepting the reasons for why my change initiative was rejected, I ended up going back to my normal school life and finished my senior year on a strong note.”

Student B’s post: “When I was close to graduating high school in 2018, my parents and I started to discuss college options. My dad, for one, always had it in his mind that I was going to be going to a four-year university, no matter what. My mom, on the other hand, didn’t mind if I went to a four-year college or not, but she wanted me to at least get my AA.

I had it in my mind that I did NOT want to go through anymore schooling. I had made it through high school, having struggled all through middle school with some math and science classes. But, in the end, I graduated high school and ended up being quite good at math and am still not so good at science. I had decided, I did NOT want to go through 2-4 more years of higher education at that point in time.

I wanted to work for my families business right out of high school, salaried. I had already been working there during the summers since 2015. My dad was quite disappointed. He told me that if I still wanted to work for him when I graduated, he wanted me to get a Business Degree. He got a Business Degree and wanted me to do the same. He runs the business and he is part owner and I’m sure having those necessary business skills was extremely useful in his career. Granted, my Aunt, who is also part owner, received a diploma in Hotel Management and is doing great as a Pre-Need Specialist, which are two very different areas of expertise.

I was adamant. I didn’t want to go through anymore schooling. I was resistant to THEM at this point and they were resistant to ME. I was not happy that even though they saw how much I struggled throughout my schooling, they still wanted me to go through 2-4 more years of school. I was very upset about this.

I was quite certain I didn’t want to go to school, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized, a four year college education and a diploma, no matter what it was in, was going to be more useful in the long run then just going into a career blind. I started applying to colleges, even earning a $25,000 scholarship per year to an out-of-state college in Montana. But, in the end, I decided that I did indeed want to be a third generation Wildcat and am now two quarters away from being finished.

While my parents showed resistance in me deciding not to go through anymore education, they were supportive, even though the idea was not ideal for them. I did end up conceiting and I do not regret going to college!”

“After watching the TED talk “What I learned from 100 days of rejection“- Jia Jiang, I was so impressed with the way he improved himself for each time of rejection. For the first time of rejection, he had run, and I can be sure that not only him, I think most the people would run as fast as they can when they got a rejection and not except me I think because of feeling sad and shyness inside our emotion. The funniest part of his speech, I think it is the bogs that he made and recorded himself after got rejected, and he showed us the changed after those rejection times. To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often- Winston Churchill, it is so true in Jia’s situation, and as the definition in our textbook, change is often considered a sign of progress and improvement. The changing of Jia appeared in the second time – request of Burger refill, and he stayed calm and did not run and explained for the Burger refill, and he learned from that. After many times of rejection, he even could teach in a University about his “rejection experience” by an ask. This can seem a big change for him from the very first rejection till the lecture. In our lecture, the professor had said that “changing is always happening, happening in our body, neighborhood and our organization”, and by the changing, Jia is so successful with his TED talk today. But, Did the change always good in a positive way? For example, yes by COVID-19 so we need to change from an in-person class to an online class and the online classes made me feel like less communication and more introverted when I do everything at home.”

Student B: While reading the chapter, TED talk and going over the lecture video, I was trying to relate the concept of organizational change with my life and I realized how the whole academic system has changed after Covid. We had to stopped attend in-person classes and go entirely online. For me, the first two quarters were like a real struggle to understand the process of online reading and writing. Faculty, students, and teachers, no one was prepared for this drastic change. We had to figure out how to take classes online, take exams, and do many things to continue the learning process. As a result, we started to have zoom meetings and use different software programs to see each other and communicate. These changes are all fascinating to me.
I cannot agree more that communication triggers change, and I also think rejection is necessary for social change. At first, the virtual environment was uncomfortable for everyone, and now we are getting used to it. They introduced different features to make it work, such as other chat rooms for new groups. Then, they introduced the responduslockdown browser to take exams to get the same environment as an exam hall. I can see there are inventions and continuous improvement as stated in this chapter. Speaking of books, we used to read books and newspapers in our hands, and now most of us read online looking at the phone or computer screen. I wonder, if we get too comfortable with the virtual environment, it is not impossible we don’t want to attend in-person classes anymore. “

“Throughout viewing the CWU College of Business website, it is clear this page has room for improvement. These areas of improvement for website design/experience include being clean, drive action, feature videos, and building a foster of trust. By including this criteria within their website, they can generate a successful website by encouraging visitors to be intrigued and find the page easy to navigate.

The CWU College of Business website could implement a clean page that is not cluttered and uses minimal distractions or confusion. This page does not provide clear context within the links provided, how students can apply to the college of business, and overall does not provide much information. While this page could be sellable, it needs to be more precise by providing arranged information that will make sense to the visitor as they are trying to gain information from the site.

The second best practice for website design/experience that can be utilized within the College of Business page is having a drive to action. The call to action for the College of Business needs to stand out and portray their purpose. The College of Business can implement an image such as “Join Now” that takes students to a page where the different programs within the Business department are presented. With this kind of call to action, students will be able to know what to do next and will assist students to know the actions they need to take to apply. This will then remove any frustration from students and create a simple experience.

Another area for improvement for this page is to implement feature videos. According to the article “11 Elements of Modern Web Design (And Web Design Trend to Watch)” by Jeffrey Vocell, feature videos can bring a solution to life to help visitors with their process of moving to the next step by offering short videos that give context on the service/product they are viewing (2021, par. 34). By implementing a video that includes alumni and present students in the College of Business by providing stories and testimonials, students will have the ability to see people and gain connections to draw them into the program. Within the feature video, this will then present a form of fostering trust and being human to then bring together in a background video where students can gain more information from not only page content, but from previous and present students.

“During and even before the pandemic started, Amazon has been the leading online retail provider for most of the world. Amazon’s profits have boomed while people have been stuck at home or in quarantine with nothing to do. During the first few months of the pandemic the stock price of Amazon went up ~55%. from march 20th to July 10.

With the convenience and ease of ordering a product from Amazon without leaving your home or finding a product you need or want with relative ease has made Amazon even more profitable and pushed it further in front of the online retail market. Before the pandemic Amazon has always done good with marketing to its customers and future customers, be it through targeted ads, paid promotions, or pushed to the top of Google searches related to the products you want. As the pandemic went on more companies have opened to deliveries and “no contact” drop-offs or using more products or services to be at a customers home. Amazon has even moved to purchase Sears and J.C. Penny location to develop distribution hubs to cut down on delivery time to make it even more convenient.

I have definitely used amazon in the last month, and some use it every day, proving that the strategy they have employed has worked wonders for them, as they have seen net positive growth through this whole pandemic. With the constant deals they advertise and product they know you want it is not hard to see why and how Amazon has dealt while in this pandemic.

An example of improvement strategies that everyone can observe nowadays is public libraries. I can see how efficiently the 5S strategy is implemented there making their services highly organized and customer-oriented. All 5 steps of the 5S strategy are present in libraries. Books and magazines are sorted, neatly arranged and these standards are maintained by personnel.

2. What problem does that strategy or countermeasure address? Please describe in 1-2 sentences.

Without the 5S strategy, we would observe chaos and disorder. Finding a book will be extremely hard and inconvenient. It would take much more time and effort for visitors and employees to detect necessary material.

3. How well do you believe it works? Please describe in 1-2 sentences.

The 5S strategy serves well for a place such as public libraries. Labeling shelves and book sections allow readers to find books they need much faster. Visitors can use a computer and through library applications to find where books they need are situated.

4. Is there anything you would recommend to improve the countermeasure itself, or anything else you would recommend to solve the problem?

There is one thing that I believe might make libraries even more efficient. Let’s pretend that each shelf of a group of books will have an electrical indicator (like a flashing light). Once you put the name of the book or author name in the search engine, the light on the shelf starts flushing indicating where the book is located. You just go right there and take what you were looking for.

“1. An example of a pull system is the ice cream shop I worked at. Similar to the Starbucks example in the lecture video, we would not make a finished product until it was ordered by a customer.

2. This strategy helps to address the problem of food safety or food spoilage that could happen if we tried to make them before they were ordered. It also keeps the freezer space needed to store the ice cream minimal because only the tubs need to fit and not a bunch of pre-scooped ice cream cones.

3. I believe that it works well because it keeps the ice cream frozen without freezer burn and allows the customers to customize their order and know it will be prepared quickly.

4. This system seems to work very well and since ice cream melts so easily there are few other systems that could work.”

According to the case, there are a host of issues in the change process at Dynacorp. Although the shift to a new structure appeared to be a good idea, the implementation has not succeeded. Some of the problems are evident on the surface, but underlying those symptoms are a small number of systemic issues that give rise to these surface-level problems. Your goal in this essay is to identify one systemic issue that you believe is causing the most problems. Then, using the political and/or cultural lens (and the related theories from the book), explain why these problems have emerged and make recommendations. Note, you can use either the political or the cultural lens, or do both. There are pros and cons of using one lens and using both lenses.

The effectiveness of your paper will be based on three elements:

  1. Define and describe the key systemic factor in the case, and make an argument about why this factor is the most important cause of the problems at Dynacorp.
  2. Show how various elements of politics and/or culture are operating, by linking specific examples – data from the case – to specific theoretical concepts from one or both lenses.
  3. Use the concepts from one or both lenses to identify three or four specific actions that you recommend to begin solving the underlying systemic factors in the organization.

Essentially your paper should begin with a claim – a ‘hypothesis’ about why the change process has been less than effective. Your claim should be based on concepts from either the political or cultural lens (or both). The paper should then make a careful and compelling argument to prove your claim, through an analysis of the data – linking specific examples from the case (your data) to theoretical concepts from the lenses. Your analysis should also be logically sound and convincing. In your conclusion, you should summarize your analysis, and use it to make three or four specific recommendations for action based on the insights you gained in your analysis. However, the focus of this paper is to practice careful thinking and argumentation, rather than jumping to a conclusion or set of suggestions.

You are the director of the marketing department in a major corporation. Your boss, the Vice President, has implemented widespread changes in budgeting for the department as a result of decisions from the CEO and Board of Directors. There have been formal communications in the form of weekly newsletters, posters on the walls of the office, and an internal instant messaging person to answer any questions. Your department is having a difficult time accepting the changes, and one of the most influential members of the department is vowing to put a stop to the changes–something most people seem happy to have happen. This person is sowing the seeds of revolution and gaining support.

You see that this situation has the potential to go very badly. Those above you are pushing to get it done. Those in your department are rallying behind the revolution leader. You are in the middle. 

What do you do?

Things to consider in the answer:

What impact could this have on acceptance or rejection of the initiative by the employees?

The CEO and Board have decided this will happen, will you approach them? If so, what is your goal with them?

Will you approach the revolution leader? If so, what is your goal with that person? What might be the outcome of the conversation with that person? How will the others in the department likely react?

What is in your thinking as you consider the situation? Are you most concerned with yourself, the company, the employees, the customers, everyone?

Student A: “As the sitting director of the marketing department, I would utilize my authority through the realm of professionalism and protocol. I understand that the employees deserve a workplace in which they are valued and heard. Though, there is no need for rebellion and division. Instead, as director, I would contact my superiors and inform them of the concerns of those who are dependent on my leadership. If the higher-ups understood that the changes they are implementing will result in the resentment of the workforce, they may very well alter the modifications to suit the company as a whole. I would inform them that the initiative may result in the resignation of a number of employees as well. My goal ultimately is to ease the tension between the two sectors of the business. If the board understands that there is also a fiscal stability factor to consider with the implementation of the alterations, they will surely see the benefit of considering all parties involved. 

I would also speak to the revolution leader. I would inform them that their concerns are heard and understandable. Afterward, I would explain why it is vital to keep the workforce and the board within a mutual understanding. A revolution has the potential of being successful. Though, creating an amicable consensus has long-term benefits. I would ensure the leader that I will not allow the employees to be unconsidered in the decision making process as a whole. It would also be necessary for them to understand that the implementations will take place all whilst informing them that I am in the process of materializing an addition of alterations that heavily favor the workforce. The employees may be frustrated that the revolution did not go as expected, but I do believe they will be relieved that their concerns will also be taken into deep consideration. My concern is for not only the department, but the entire company. “

Student B: “I feel that there are many ways this situation can go. It truly depends on the type of people you are working with. Some people can just be hardheaded and irrational while others just need an explanation or a different perspective. I try to listen to individuals’ concerns and talk to each person before making any arguments. Sometimes there are misunderstandings that need to be addressed in order to move forward with the plan. I would probably start by hearing each person’s complaints and weeding out the people who have simple misunderstandings of the changes or information they have received from others. I would approach the CEO and Board with any valid concerns that may impact the entire department. My goal with them is to represent the people in my department. While it is my job to pass down information to the department it is also my job to see the department thriving and that cannot happen if the employees are not happy at work. I would have to approach the revolution leader, that is part of representing the CEO and Board to the department. My goal with them would be to understand what their concerns are and why they are having them. I think reasoning with the rebel and finding common ground between the two parties is what would help create an environment in which people could open up to hear another perspective. Getting each side to be open to hearing the other’s concerns would be the goal for the entire situation. In the end, a company cannot bend to one person’s threat. Every action needs to be in the interest of the company, but that would be another situation. My concern is for everyone. I think there is a way to please the majority and at least get everyone on the same page. The company must be the first priority, as there are no jobs without it, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have satisfied employees. Their happiness is not my responsibility but I do feel a responsibility to ensure their comfort in coming to work each day.”
