Every president since 1945 has faced new circumstances and made decisions that have (often) helped to increase the power of the presidency. Choose a president we have covered in this class, serving after 1945, and consider their response to a major crisis or issue during their tenure in office. (The topic should be one you have not written about in a previous CT assignment).

TOPIC PRESIDENT – RONALD REAGAN

Once you have selected a topic, research the range of response options available to the president, either emanating from their advisors, public pressure, party politics, or their own inclinations, etc. Find at least four (4) primary sources that are closely related to the crisis or the president’s response.

Create a visual presentation on the president and crisis or event that you have chosen to research. Consider adding audio to the visual presentation as well.

As you develop your presentation, discuss the options or paths and consider why the president ultimately chose the response they did. How would you evaluate this president’s decision-making strategies and his overall handling of the crisis? Were there any implications or results, expected or unexpected, that the president had to manage? How was society impacted or changed by the decision?

Your presentation is due at the end of week 8 and must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Use the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.)
  • Your slideshow should offer at least two different types of media (e.g., maps, photos, paintings, audio clips, etc.).
  • Each image should include a caption and source. Images should be carefully chosen to represent your topic. Consider an audio track to accompany your presentation (optional).
  • An introductory slide should outline your presentation and include a thesis statement. A concluding slide should sum up your analysis and leave the reader with a thought-provoking statement.
  • Each slide should include a title and at least 4-5 sentences on the main topic or idea that is conveyed in the image(s). In other words, your slides must be substantive and include text that presents your topic in a thoughtful way, so that it is meaningful on its own to anyone viewing the presentation.
  • Remember to include a final slide with references used.

Option #1: Writing Summaries: Frederick Douglass’s “My Escape from Slavery”

Summary is a natural place to start any writing activity that involves reading other texts. Summary is often used as a prewriting step to clarify the author’s actual message and purpose. Often this involves active reading, highlighting passages, annotating in the margins, and rereading. It’s very difficult to use someone else’s words and ideas when you aren’t certain what is really going on in the text.

For this assignment, you are asked to compose an effective summary of the Frederick Douglas Escape from Slavery essay. To help you compose an effective summary, please review the linked document “How to Write a Summary.” Also, be sure to refer to the active reading strategies you reviewed and practiced in Module 1.

Concepts to keep in mind when writing a successful summary:

  • Summary Definition A summary provides a concisely expressed explanation of the selection’s content: what the author’s main points are, what particular methods the author uses, etc. Your focus in summary writing is always on the primary and main supporting points rather than on the details of the text.
  • The text is objective: this means you should not editorialize or evaluate the text by either reading between the lines or judging the article as “masterful” or “insulting,” etc.
  • The text is in third person: For a brief summary like this, there is no reason for any I statements such as “I think she’s saying…” or “I believe…” etc.
  • The author is the subject in most, if not all, sentences. Remember, people, not articles, write, so avoid phrases such as “The article is saying…” Instead, start most sentences with subject/verb like this: “Heywood argues…,” “The author claims…,” “She supports her assertion with…” etc.

Requirements:

  • The summary is a minimum of 10 sentences long (maximum length is two pages) not counting the title and reference pages, which you must include.
  • You have maintained objectivity and refrained from passing judgment.
  • The author, designated by last name only, is included throughout the summary.
  • The first sentence includes the title of the article and the author’s name.
  • The text has been proofread for coherence, readability, and grammar errors.

Refer to the following document for assistance on how to write an effective summary:

Link: ENG101_Mod02_How_to_Write_a_Summary (Links to an external site.)

Your paper should be 1-2 pages in length and conform to APA guidelines in the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.). Include at least two scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU Global Library is a good place to find these references.

PLEASE WRITE A 2 PAGE PAPER ON:

In 1954, Abraham Maslow created a model that has been used to identify the importance of satisfying needs in human development and growth. The National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) annual conference in your region (WNWOHS) is coming up soon and you are determined to co-present with a faculty member in your program. The faculty member agrees! Now it is time to write up the proposal to submit to WNWOHS. Address your topic, that summarizes Maslow’s theory and how it can be used to assist other human service professionals for optimal service delivery.

Your paper should address the following:

  1. Who was Abraham Maslow? Describe briefly.
  2. What was his major contribution to the field of psychology?
  3. How can Maslow’s theory be used to assist human service professionals in providing care, such as abused and neglected children, natural disaster survivors, and homeless persons, for example.
  4. Explain why you find Maslow’s theory to be important so to the human services when working with clients.

Be creative and have fun with this written proposal of your presentation. Good luck!

Your proposal should be 2-3 pages in length and conform to APA guidelines in the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.). Include at least two scholarly references in addition to the course textbook to support your analysis and position. The CSU Global Library (Links to an external site.) is a good place to find these reference.

APA FORMAT

AND THEN…

Please write a 250-word paragraph on:

Review the various ‘perspectives’ used in human service delivery that are included in this week’s reading assignments.  Choose one of the perspectives and share a scenario where the perspective can be applied and how the human services professional may be able to assist.

For example, the hierarchical needs perspective states that basic needs to be met before the next level of needs can be attained.  A client who has lost their home due to a natural disaster would need assistance with housing (physiological level) before they can feel security and stability (safety level).   In this scenario, the human services professional can assist by connecting the client to temporary housing that can be used until the client is able to achieve a more permanent solution.  The Red Cross, a local shelter, church, or other community resources may be helpful in this scenario.  The human services professional may also help connect the client with family that could assist.

Your initial posting should be 250-500 words and must be submitted by Thursday, midnight (MT), of this week. By Sunday at midnight (MT), respond to two or more of your classmates’ initial posts in one of the following ways:

The perspective is “situational perspective”.

2 Page Paper with at least 2 sources & APA format:

Foster care agencies face many challenges. There are often more children than there are beds in foster homes, resulting in the use of emergency shelters to house children. Placement is even more difficult for children who need therapeutic foster homes because of the scarcity of such homes. Adolescents face particularly daunting challenges when they “age out” of foster care, often with an incomplete education, a lack of critical job skills, and unaddressed mental health issues. As a result, they have a markedly increased risk of homelessness.

Imagine you work for a foster care agency. Your agency recruits, trains, and supports foster families and then places children and adolescents in the foster homes. It also provides supervision and oversight during the placement, all under contract with the state department of services for children and families.

Your supervisor has requested that you present to your new team of foster families on the following to create awareness of ethical concerns, emphasize responsibilities, and to provide the families full working knowledge of the entire process:

  1. What are your ethical obligations to the children/adolescents?
  2. What are your ethical obligations to the families?
  3. Consider and explain the entire process, from recruitment on.
  4. What are your obligations to the agency?
  5. What is the agency’s ethical obligations to you, as their employee?

Please write a separate paragraph on this:

What does it mean to live below the poverty level? Determine the income for a family of four living in poverty. Be sure your response identifies income levels for poverty based on current U.S. National averages available on the HHS Website (Links to an external site.)

Based on the poverty level you have located on the HHS Website, consider the cost of living in your area. Would a family of four be able to afford the rent if they lived nearby? Is there public transportation or would they need to buy a car?

Specify on how the family would NOT be able to live at the poverty level in your area.
