The project team creates a work vision that will guide all the project activities. The project team leader identifies all the requirements and lists the ways to achieve them. The statements by Kirk (2019) mean that it is essential for data analysts to establish why they are developing specific data visualization. He seeks to capture all the necessary information about project tasks. The brief is used to add value to the data being visualized.
Creating a project vision is essential for any data visualization task. It gives an early conceptual understanding of what is being developed and provides clues of the best-fit tone, experiences, and style the visualization must take. A clear vision will act as a roadmap that can be followed during the visualization process. The fundamental purposes of an image are conceiving things before and preparing for their probable outcomes. It clears all doubts on the set goals. Every organization has its own organizational setup. These organizations only succeed when there is proper planning, the definition of in-scopes in what the organization is trying to achieve, and the initiatives to achieve the organization’s objective. According to Kirk, the essence of “Formulating Your Brief” is to “identify the context in which your work will be undertaken and then define its aims: it is the who, what, where, when and how.” It could be as formal or informal as any project you think you must make it. This phase is where you create a vision or plan for the work (Kirk, 2019).
Formulating a brief gives clarity, context, and a clear definition of the project. It can also be used as a reference document about the project information and conditions, which could be shared, agreed upon, and always referred back if needed within the stakeholders. Formulating a brief gives a direction and serves as a framework for data visualization for that specific project or organization. Even the data mining tools, BI tools, and data analytical tools need a defined parameter on what kind of data is to be mined, what data variables are to be considered while extracting the data, and lastly, what objective is an organization trying to achieve here with the data analysis with the given data should be the questions that formulation of the brief can address. For instance, if the data sets are just random data and not as per the desired analytics, then the formulation of a brief can be referred to find the scope of the project and in-scope data extracts (Kirk, 2019).
