Be sure to answer the following questions:

Are there helpful ways of representing the scores visually and numerically? Try to apply all the ways that we have discussed. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.

What words would you use to describe this data set to another teacher? What features do you think are important? How do your graphs support your description? Be precise as possible.

How might you go about assigning grades to scores? Make a grade assignment and explain why you choose it.

How could you describe the “middle” of the data? Be specific.

How could you describe the overall “spread” of the data? Be specific.

What might you conclude about your class’s understanding?

A write-up is a detailed solution to an assigned exploration. These write-ups should be readable independently of any worksheet on which they are based, in good English, be in paragraph form, and either legibly handwritten in ink or word-processed.

Overall, the problem report needs to

Clearly state the problems to be solved.

State the answers in complete sentences that stand on their own.

Define all variables, terminology and notation used.

Include visual representations of the data with clear labeling. (Use the forms we have discussed in this class: stem-and-leaf, histogram, pie graphs, and box and whisker plots.)

Clearly communicate the advantages and disadvantages of the tables and graphs.

Provide a description of each of the graphs and tables and how they describe the scores.

Give a precise and well-organized explanation of all answers.

Explain analysis on how and why you would assign grades (i.e. what constitutes A’s, B’s,…).

Clearly communicate the quantitative statistics that measure the “middle” (mean, median, and mode) and “spread” (range and standard deviation) of the data and a verbal description of the statistics.

Resources:

Flannery O’Connor, “Good Country People”

Philip Roth, “Defender of the Faith”

  1. James Baldwin “Going to Meet the Man”
  2. The is a one-pager like the previous version. Remember to write as much as you can fit on a single page, without paragraph breaks or indentations. Think of it as slightly more refined free writing, but it won’t graded like a formal essay.
  3. Instructions: Answer ONE of the questions below and then submit. Your answer should fill a single page (as with our previous one-pager), and avoid summarizing the events of the story. Rather move immediately into analysis by answering ONE of the questions below as directly (as in, parrot the language of the question if you wish) as possible.
  4. All of the questions are about Flannery O’Connor, “Good Country People”

1. Flannery O’ Connor writes, “Besides the neutral expression that she wore when she was alone, Mrs. Freeman had two others, forward and reverse, that she used for all her human dealings. Her forward expression was steady and driving like the advance of a heavy truck. Her eyes never swerved to left or right but turned as the story turned as if they followed a yellow line down the center of it. She seldom used the other expression because it was not often necessary for her to retract a statement, but when she did, her face came to a complete stop, there was an almost imperceptible movement of her black eyes, during which they seemed to be receding, and then the observer would see that Mrs. Freeman, though she might stand there as real as several grain sacks thrown on top of each other, was no longer there in spirit.” Most of the story hinges on Hulga’s relationship with her mother and the Bible salesman who meets them both, yet O’Connor begins her story with Mrs. Freeman. Based on the language of these opening lines, how does the narrator introduce Mrs. Freeman? What do her three characteristic facial expressions have to do with the main plot of the story and why does O’Connor associate her with the automobile?

2. To Mrs. Hopewell, there are “good country people” and there are “trash.” Partly this categorization of society may have something to do with her three favorite sayings: “Nothing is perfect. This was one of Mrs. Hopewell’s favorite sayings. Another was: that is life! And still another, the most important, was: well, other people have their opinions too.” . What are the results of Mrs. Hopewell’s perspective of other people on herself and Hulga? Now, compare Mrs. Hopewell’s sayings to the Bible salesman’s last lines: “‘I hope you don’t think,’ he said in a lofty indignant tone, ‘that I believe in that crap! I may sell Bibles but I know which end is up and I wasn’t born yesterday and I know where I’m going!'”  How does the Bible salesman fit into her social categories? What similarities do you see in the language used by Mrs. Hopewell and the salesman?

3. Hulga and her mother have a vexed relationship. Consider these lines: “When Mrs. Hopewell thought the name, Hulga, she thought of the broad blank hull of a battleship. She would not use it”; and “It seemed to Mrs. Hopewell that every year she grew less like other people and more like herself—bloated, rude, and squint-eyed.” Part of Mrs. Hopewell’s disdain may derive from Hulga’s name change—here are the lines in which the narrator provides Hulga’s perspective on her new name: “She had a vision of the name working like the ugly sweating Vulcan who stayed in the furnace and to whom, presumably, the goddess had to come when called. She saw it as the name of her highest creative act. One of her major triumphs was that her mother had not been able to turn her dust into Joy, but the greater one was that she had been able to turn it herself into Hulga.” What significance does each of these characters see in Hulga’s name? Citing evidence from this passage, describe their relationship.

4. Hulga’s sexual awakening is distinguished by detachment and analytical thought: “The kiss, which had more pressure than feeling behind it, produced that extra surge of adrenalin in the girl that enables one to carry a packed trunk out of a burning house, but in her, the power went at once to the brain. Even before he released her, her mind, clear and detached and ironic anyway, was regarding him from a great distance, with amusement but with pity. She had never been kissed before and she was pleased to discover that it was an unexceptional experience and all a matter of the mind’s control. Some people might enjoy drain water if they were told it was vodka. When the boy, looking expectant but uncertain, pushed her gently away, she turned and walked on, saying nothing as if such business, for her, were common enough.” Why does this experience produce feelings of autonomy and power in Hulga?

  • A critical analysis paper asks the writer to make an argument and/or explain a particular viewpoint. The goal of this assignment is two-fold: one, identify and explain the viewpoint that the presenter of the Diversity Workshop is making, and two, provide your own argument/ viewpoint(s) about the viewpoints of the presenter. One of the key directions of this assignment is to avoid summarizing. You are not writing a report of the Diversity Workshop; rather, you are critiquing it. Sometimes it can seem intimidating to “criticize” something that is being professionally delivered. However, part of this exercise is to explore the fact that even though the presenter is highly qualified, they are still advancing a viewpoint and providing evidence – their aim is to persuade you that their argument/viewpoint is true, not just to present facts. Once you recognize this, you can analyze whether or not you find their viewpoints compelling.
  • 2-page critique of the Diversity Workshop/Training
  • Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spaced
  • MS Word Document
  • Even though you are potentially only referring to one source – the presentation – you still need to cite your information, using either parenthetical citation or footnotes/endnotes. APA format.
  • Double-check the assignment to make sure you have covered all the points
  • Structuring the paper
  • Introduction
    1. Identify the work being criticized
    2. Present thesis – argument about the work
    3. Preview your argument – what are the steps you will take to prove your argument
  • Short summary of the work
    1. Does not need to be comprehensive – present only what the reader needs to know to understand your argument
  • Your argument
    1. This should be the bulk of the paper – Your professor wants to read your argument about the work, not a summary
    2. Analyze the presenter based on the points presented and whether or not they succeeded in their goal of the Diversity Workshop/Training
    3. State your reactions so that they do not appear to be arbitrary judgments. This can be accomplished by adding support from an authority (textbook, articles, observations, personal experience, etc.)
  • Conclusion
    1. State your conclusions about the overall presentation reviewing the strengths/weaknesses
    2. Reflect on how you have proven your argument
    3. Point out the importance of your argument (beyond it being a requirement for passing the class ☺)
    4. Note potential avenues for additional research or analysis

Your Health Care Organization (URHealth) CEO is excited that you are enrolled in a Health Care Accounting Course. He believes that that course would equip you with the Accounting Fundamentals for Health Care Management, knowing that that competency will benefit URHealth in the foundational understanding of its accounting and financial reporting. Coincidentally, you would be accompanying the CEO to a luncheon where he will present, among others, the financial health of URHealth to donors and other attendees. The CEO who has no accounting knowledge whatsoever asks for your opinion on the following.

  1. He wants you to explain to him the difference between managerial and financial accounting.
  2. He told you that he heard from a commentator saying that “health care managers should only be concerned about the organization’s long-term financial health and prospects.” However, he confided in you that he found that statement confusing and so wanted some clarifications from you. Do you agree with that statement? Explain.
  3. Understanding that revenue is central to URHealth financial viability, he asks you if health care providers record as revenue what they charge customers. Briefly explain.
  4. You were surprised that the CEO believes that all third-party payers are private insurance companies. He saw the astonishment on your face and wonders why. If he was wrong, he wants you to explain to him why he was wrong.
  5. Finally, he remembers that someone from the audience could ask general questions about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Therefore, he wants you to discuss at least two significant details of the ACT.

Present your responses to the questions in a memo format to the CEO.

Your CFO informed you that that CEO will reward you graciously with 100 points towards your promotion and that those points will be allocated to each of the five areas of expectations above as follows:

Instructions

For the research paper assignment, you will analyze a movie (rated R or lower), using one of the types of literary criticisms that we have studied in this course. Formulate a thesis about your movie. Your thesis should be your opinion, not just a fact, and should be a point you can argue.

You do not need to analyze the entire film. In fact, take a few seconds or a specific scene and focus on all of the details in that short scene. Too many times students summarize the film instead of analyzing the elements. Slow down. Look at the details.

The approach

Once you have a thesis established, search for scholarly works about your criticism, not the movie, within the TCC database that either support or refute your claim.

You should use the same research from your previous essay, the literary criticism essay.

Tip: Use the same quotes from the research. Use those same points to analyze aspects of the movie instead of starting an entirely new essay.

The process

Within the research paper, you will build your argument, using the secondary sources as evidence. Whether you quote directly, paraphrase, or summarize, you must give credit to the source of your information by using parenthetical citations and a works cited page.

Plagiarizing from a scholarly source or another student’s work will result in a zero (0) for the paper with no opportunity for make-up or extra-credit assignments. Don’t just quote or paraphrase someone else’s work. Be sure to explain your evidence by supporting your argument/thesis.

The Details

This is a formal paper, which means no first- or second-person pronouns, no contractions, and no slang. Also, the paper should be no fewer than five pages, not including a works cited page, and should include a minimum of five sources, not including your movie. Five database articles and one movie equals six sources total. The Works Cited page should be page six.

The enhancement

You need to imitate and highlight three “fancy” sentences in your essay just as we practiced in the Sentence Imitating packet.

List model sentences from the packet after your source citations on your Works Cited page. I should be able to match your sentences with the model sentences. In other words, put them in the same, corresponding order.

you work for the leading healthcare group in your community named HealthCo Inc. In Module One Discussion Board Assessment, you appraised, evaluated, and discussed with your team members the relationship between health care costs and health care outcomes, placing those within the context of the political environment in the US. During this Module, there is a change to the composition of your team, and you are tasked with the responsibility to work on the company’s financial statements and engage your new team members in the process.

You overheard your CEO telling your CFO to provide her with the company’s Financial Information. Your CFO approaches you to help him prepare for the Financial Reporting process. Given your competencies in the Health Care Accounting Class, you informed your CFO of the need to take a closer look at the financial statement so as to provide a complete scenario of the company’s financial health. He appears to agree with you more so that the company’s external auditors would examine the company’s financial statements. Knowing that the external audit process is central to the financial reporting process, you cautioned him that audit failure could occur.  He sighed and wondered if you could help him to answer the following questions in detail.

Why do organizations prepare cash flow statements and operating statements?

Describe the difference between the Excess of Revenues over Expenses and the Increase in Net Assets without Donor Restrictions.

  1. Evaluate and discuss reasons for audit failure.
  2. The CFO will reward you graciously with 100 points towards your promotion, and that those points will be allocated to each of the three areas of expectations above as follows:
  3. 25 points

25 points

50 points.

  1. To appropriately guide you so that you can take full advantage of the point incentives/reward system, the CFO advised you to follow the company’s document titled “Discussion Board Postings Rubric,” as the HR Director would use that document to score your responses to the above questions. In addition to that Rubric, you are aware that the Organization always encourages you to feel free to contact other relevant materials that you may deem fit. You must cite and provide references for all materials used as appropriate.

1.How would you describe Prufrock? How does he attempt to portray himself? What might he reveal about himself inadvertently?

2. How does Prufrock seem to spend his time? Why does he keep insisting “there will be time”?

3. The poem opens, “Let us go then, you and I.” Who do you think Prufrock addressing here? Who is “you”?

4.What sorts of spaces does the poem take as its settings? How are they described?

5. Eliot originally considered the title “Prufrock Among the Women” for this poem. What is Prufrock’s relationship to women? How does he describe them? How does he feel about them?

6. In the opening stanza, Prufrock declares that he will “lead you to an overwhelming question” but never articulates the actual question (line 10). Instead, he endlessly debates the wisdom of asking the question, repeating “Do I dare?” (lines 38, 45, 122) and “how should I presume?” (line 54, 61, 68) throughout the poem. What do you think this overwhelming question might be?

7. Why do you think Eliot titled this poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”? In what sense is it a love song? Why is the title the only line in the poem in which the speaker’s name is mentioned?

8. What is the effect of the opening stanza’s famous comparison of the city evening to “a patient etherised upon a table” (line 3)? Why might Prufrock use this simile

9. Reread the poem and pay careful attention to its use of repetition. What words, phrases, and even whole stanzas are repeated? How does the poem create an effect of circling around an idea through repetition?

10. How does the poem’s deployment of repetition contribute to its theme of indecision and hesitancy?

11. How does time work in this poem? What events take place in the past? What events take place in the present? Which represent Prufrock’s plans for the future? How can you tell?

12. What kinds of physical descriptions of himself does Prufrock provide? In particular, how is he dressed? How does he seem to feel about his clothing and clothing choices?

13. How does Prufrock describe other people, particularly women? What body parts are mentioned? Why do you think he focuses so much on parts rather than describing whole bodies or looks?

14. What is the significance of Prufrock’s claim that he should have been “a pair of ragged claws / Scuttling” (lines 73–74)? Why might a crab be a particularly symbolic creature as a stand-in for Prufrock?

15. When does Prufrock mention food and drink in the poem? What does tea, and the ritual of tea taking, in particular seem to signify here?

16. Why does Prufrock mention mermaids at the end of the poem? How does he describe the sea? How does the sea compare to the cityscape and urban rooms he describes earlier in the poem?

17. Write a brief summary of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Did you have difficulty locating concrete actions to summarize in the poem? How does the fact that the time sequence of the poem is so uncertain affect your ability to summarize it? Did you have difficulty deciding which events to emphasize and which to leave out?

18. Short Response: Literary critics frequently suggest that Prufrock, as a character, serves as an embodiment of the disillusionment, impotence, and futility of the modern human condition. Reread the poem with this claim in mind and then do a short freewrite on the topic. What aspects of the poem lend themselves to this reading? Do you think Prufrock is supposed to be a representative for modern man?

You have been working as a nurse in the adult oncology unit for the past year. You have developed a close relationship with many of your patients, but Mr. Newcomb has a special place in your heart. He has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and has undergone aggressive chemotherapy. Each day his wife has come to the unit to be with her husband. They have been married for over 40 years and share a deep love.

Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb have made the decision to no longer continue with treatment and have decided that hospice care is needed. Over the past few days, you have watched Mr. Newcomb’s health decline, and you can tell from your experience that he does not have much time left to live. Mr. Newcomb has been very open about discussing his death, and you have had the opportunity to learn about his life and the legacy he will leave behind.

While you are completing your rounds, you stop in Mr. Newcomb’s room to see how he is doing. You ask, “Is there anything else I can do for you?” Mr. Newcomb has rarely asked for anything, but today he has one request. Mr. Newcomb states, “Before I die, I would like to see my mistress one more time. Mrs. Newcomb is always here. Do you think you could tell her that I will be busy for a few hours tomorrow so I can make arrangements to see my mistress one more time?”

Reflect on the following questions before you begin working on this task:

  • What would you do in this scenario?
  • How can your knowledge of ethical principles be utilized to determine your response to Mr. Newcomb?
  • How would this affect you as a nurse and direct provider of care for Mr. Newcomb?
  • REQUIREMENTS

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. An originality report is provided when you submit your task that can be used as a guide.

You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.
