Step 6: Begin a Security Models Summary

In this step and the following step, you will develop a short summary for each of the security models listed. These reports will serve as an Appendix A to the final memo and will document the security models and their attributes in advance of the memo that you will deliver with your recommended approach.

Each summary should include a descriptive and evaluative paragraph on the following attributes:

Include the origins of the model (who developed it, when was it developed, and the context under which it was developed), main characteristics of the model (details on the business, sector, industry for whom the model was developed), and key features of the model, you will also identify key features, weaknesses, and targeted sectors and/or infrastructures.

Write summaries for the following common models:

  • Bell-LaPadula
  • Biba’s Strict Integrity Policy
  • Clark-Wilson
  • Chinese Wall
  • Clinical Information Systems Security
  • Noninterference Security
  • Deducibility Security
  • Graham-Denning
  • These Security Models Summary should be submitted as Appendix A (complete this in 2 pages with references)

Step 7: Analyze the Security Models

Analyze each of the security models that you reviewed above and their attributes against the needs of your organization as identified in the earlier steps. (Capital One). Identify features from the models that apply to your assigned organization’s security needs. Also include any security attributes that you believe are important for your organization but are not included in any of the models. The information that you gather here, will contribute to the development of a security plan.

Step 8: Design a Custom Security Plan

Having completed an assessment of your organization’s security posture and the analysis of security models, you will now design a custom security plan for the organization.(Capital One) The custom security plan should meet the following criteria:

  • The security plan should coincide with the organization’s IT vision, mission, and goals.
  • Include an information security program that aligns with business strategy.
  • Incorporate all internal and external business functions within the organization’s security programs.
  • Classify risks according to relevant criteria.
  • Prioritize threats from both internal and external sources.
  • Rank the most relevant security attributes for the organization and list them in priority order. This list will serve as Appendix B to your final assignment. (complete this in 3 pages with references)

First I need to inform you that I have already completed all the steps in the lab which accounts for 90% of the project. I just need someone to place the images in a document and draft a lab report. Also, answer the 4 questions in the lab report, two of which are general information questions that don’t require the lab work. The other two will be based on the photos I will upload soon.

Digital forensics involves processing data from many different types of devices, ranging from desktops to laptops, tablets to smartphones, servers to cloud storage, and even devices embedded in automobiles and aircraft. In this project, you will focus on the architecture and imaging of desktop and laptop computers. You will be working in a virtual machine (VM) to image and verify the contents of the following:

  • a USB stick
  • the random access memory (RAM) and swap space of a live computer
  • a networked computer hard drive

There are seven steps in this project. In the first step, you will review a technical manual containing information about where data of forensic value is typically found inside digital devices. The next two steps will guide you through the process of imaging a USB stick with both Linux and Windows tools. The next step will pose several questions that frequently come up in cases similar to this scenario. In the next step, you will be back to collecting forensic evidence; this time you will be imaging the RAM (memory) and swap space of a live, running computer. In the next step, you will image a computer’s hard drive over the network. In the final step, you will compile all lab notes and reports into one comprehensive report. The final assignment in this project is a forensic imaging lab report that can be presented in a court of law.

Before you can begin imaging the USB drive provided by your supervisor, you need to review your technical manual in order to prepare a memo to give to your company’s legal team. Are you ready to get started?

Step 1: Brief the Legal Team on Forensics

Before you have a chance to begin the imaging process, your supervisor calls to tell you that the organization’s legal team has been asking questions about types, sources, and collection of digital information. Team members have also asked about file formats. Your supervisor asks you to prepare a brief explanatory memo. You use the department’s technical manual to compose your memo on finding valuable forensic information and storing digital evidence. You also review image verification using hashing, an important component of digital forensics.

For the first step in this project, prepare a memo (one to two pages in length following this format) in plain language that summarizes where valuable digital forensic information resides in the device, as well as collection and storage options. The devices to be addressed are USB sticks, RAM and swap space, and operating system hard disks. You will need to research and cite reference sources for each answer contained your memo (e.g., NIST) For each electronic media device described, include a short description of the following:

  • identify the digital media device examined
  • types of data that can be found there
  • reasons why the data has potential value to an investigation in general, and for this case in particular
  • list the possible digital evidence storage formats (raw, E01 (ewf), and AFF) and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each format, and
  • how digital forensic images are collected (local and remote, memory and disk) and verified.

Your memo will be included in the final forensic imaging lab report.

Step 2: Image a USB Drive Using Linux Tools

In the first step in this project, you reviewed technical information and imaging procedures and briefed your legal team on digital forensic basics. Now, it’s time to move forward with the investigation.

The USB stick may contain intellectual property that you can use to prove the suspect’s guilt, or at least establish intent. Security personnel recovered the stick from the suspect’s desk drawer the night before. You take possession of the stick, recording the physical exchange on the chain-of-custody document prepared by the security officers.

Your team’s policy is, when practical, to use multiple tools when conducting digital forensic investigations, so you decide to image the USB stick using both Linux and Windows tools.

To get started, review the lab instructions in the box below, as well as methods of acquisition. Then go to the virtual lab to set up your evidence drive and proceed to enable write protection, sterilize the target media, perform a static acquisition of Linux data, and verify the USB stick on the sterilized media using Linux tools in preparation for the report and notes requested by your supervisor.

Step 3: Image a USB Drive Using Windows Tools

After imaging the USB drive with Linux in the previous step, your next step is to image the USB drive again, this time using Windows tools. Review the lab instructions in the box below, and then go to the virtual lab. When you complete the activity, review your lab notes and report for accuracy and completeness; they will be included in your final forensic imaging lab report in the final step.

Step 4: Respond to Questions from the Legal Team

In previous steps, you imaged the USB drive using Linux and Windows tools. In this step, you will create a legal memorandum that responds to pointed questions from your organization’s legal team. The legal team has been involved in cybercrime cases before, but team members want to make sure they are prepared for possible legal challenges. They have requested very specific information about imaging procedures based upon your review of reference sources in the field.

Research sources on digital forensics imaging and mounting procedures before writing your response. Then review Set Up Your Evidence Drive, Hash Functions, Imaging Programs, and Image Verification With Hashing as needed.

Questions from the legal team:

  1. Assuming that this is a criminal case that will be heard in a court of law, which hashing algorithm will you use and why?
  2. What if the hash of your original does not match your forensic copy? What kinds of issues could that create? What could cause this situation?
  3. What if your OS automatically mounts your flash drive prior to creating your forensic duplicate? What kinds of problems could that create?
  4. How will you be able to prove that your OS did not automatically mount your flash drive and change its contents prior to the creation of the forensic copy?

The legal team would like you to respond in the form of a brief memo (one to two pages following this format) written in plain, simple English. The memo will be included as an attachment to your final forensic imaging lab report in the final step, so review it carefully for accuracy and completeness.

You are hoping that you will be able to access the suspect’s local computer next.

Step 5: Acquire RAM and Swap Space

In the previous step, you addressed the concerns of your company’s legal team. While you were doing so, the suspect’s afternoon training session started, so now you can move to the next stage of your investigation.

Your organization’s IT department backs up the hard drives of HQ computers on a regular basis, so you are interested only in the suspect’s RAM (referred to as volatile data storage) and swap space. The RAM and swap space may reveal programs used to hide or transmit intellectual property, in addition to the intellectual property itself (past or current). You have a four-hour window to acquire the RAM and swap space of his live computer. When you arrive at the suspect’s office, the computer is running, but locked. Fortunately, the company IT department has provided you with the administrator password, so you log on to the system. Review the lab instructions in the box below, and then go to the virtual lab. Follow the steps required to acquire and analyze the RAM and swap space and perform imaging of a live computer.

Step 6: Perform Forensic Imaging Over a Network

In the previous step, you acquired and analyzed the RAM and swap space from the suspect’s live, local computer. In this step, you perform a similar analysis on his networked, off-site computer. Take a minute to conside forensic evidence in networks.

Your supervisor confirms that the suspect’s remote office is closed for the weekend, so you are free to image his computer via the network to store the digital evidence. The remote computer is locked, but the company IT department has provided an administrator password for your investigation. Using your forensic workstation at headquarters, you log on to the remote system.

If the image were going to pass unencrypted over an untrusted network (such as the internet), you’d would want to conduct the transfer over SSH, but since you’re on the company network and connecting to the remote office via a VPN, you can use the dd command to transfer a copy of the remote hard drive to your local workstation using the netcat tool.

Review the lab instructions in the box below, and then go to the virtual lab. Follow the steps required to image the computer over the network.

Step 7: Submit Final Forensic Imaging Lab Report

Now that you’ve completed the necessary acquisition and imaging tasks, you’re ready to compile all your reports and lab notes into a single forensic imaging lab report that you will submit to your supervisor. Your supervisor reminds you that your report may be presented in a court case, so it needs to meet legal requirements. The report should include the following sections:

  1. One- to two-page memo addressing the types, sources, collection of digital information, as well as file formats
  2. Imaging of a USB drive using Linux tools (lab notes, report)
  3. Imaging of a USB drive using Windows tools (lab notes, report)
  4. One- to two-page memo responding to questions about imaging procedures
  5. RAM and swap acquisition—live, local computer (lab notes, report)
  6. Forensic imaging over a network (lab notes, report)

Submit your forensic imaging lab report to your supervisor (instructor) for evaluation.

Case Discussion

Smithfield Custom Furniture (Part 2)

As a result of its consultants’ wonderful guidance in 1901, Smithfield Custom Furniture has continued to do extremely well financially. It is now 1987, and the company has been headed by the founder’s grandson, Jonas Smithfield III. He has run the company for the past twenty years.

The company now has 247 retail stores. 220 stores are spread throughout the 50 states, and 27 stores are located in England, France, and Germany. Each country has 9 stores. In total, the company employs 13,000 people. Approximately 40% are manufacturing, distribution, quality control, design, delivery, administrative, and back-office work. Approximately 60% of the employees are in retail stores.

It has been Smithfield Custom Furniture’s mission to target the wealthiest segments of the market. The company does all its manufacturing in the United States at six facilities, recently modernized with the latest equipment. They use the finest and most exotic woods to make distinctive furniture for their clientele. Much of their work is limited edition, and they try to ensure demand is slightly higher than supply for each product they make.

For the past 20 years, Jonas Smithfield III has been aware of the financial growth in a large segment of the workforce, primarily due to more women in the workforce holding full-time and professional occupations. He knows too that families are moving more often and may not need or desire the exclusivity of his furniture. His last concern is that his plants may not be working as efficiently as they could. In other words, he realizes his plants could produce less of the high-end furniture if the company developed a line of products that was still upscale—aimed at mid-career professional households.

1. Explanation of Mission Statement Requirements

2. A Mission Statement for Smithfield Custom Furniture’s New Product Line

3. Explanation of Vision Statement Requirements

4. Vision statement for Smithfield Custom Furniture’s Product Line

5. Application of either of Michael Porter’s two strategies — Competitive Advantage (low cost versus exclusivity) or Competitive Strategy (Five Forces Model)

Your Task Format for Your Response Post

Two Options for Your Required Replies to Classmates

Option 1 is to find an issue of the classmate to whom you respond with which you disagree. You must state why you believe there is a better manner to address a particular issue that differs from your classmate’s response. You must state the major idea associated with your choice and why that idea applies to the issue more appropriately. You must support your reply with course materials, in-text citations, and references.

Option 2 occurs if you agree with all of a particular classmate’s initial posting responses. In that case, you must expand on one issue that your classmate presented. Your enhancement will provide more depth or other related factors that your classmate should consider. Your reply must be supported with course materials, in-text citations, and references.

You may use either Option 1 or Option 2 for each different classmate to whom you respond.

“Required, your task is to reply to 4 classmates,
instructions below”

Instructions for Responses to Classmates’ Posts

A response posting should be a minimum of one short paragraph. Word totals for these posts should be in the 75–150-word range. Your response posts’ goal is to extend discussions already taking place or pose new possibilities or ideas not previously voiced. Your goal should be to motivate the group discussion and present a creative approach to the topic. Do not merely agree or disagree, repeating what a classmate stated or what you have already stated. Explain the ‘why or how’ with supporting evidence and concepts from the course material. Include in-text citations and associated references within a reference list.

**All 4 student needing responses are in four different word

. What do you think about Paige’s story? Is her experience a valid one? Could it be that Paige’s experience does, indeed, provide us with a unique window into the dramatic influence that sex-hormones can exert on brain function, or is it possible that something else is going on?

b. Explain how sex hormones might explain Paige’s experience. Be sure to include a consideration of critical periods and primary/secondary effects. Is there any specific evidence in her story that supports a hormonal mechanism?

First mate post

Paige’s story is a interesting one and can very easily be baffling. I defiantly think her experience is valid because she is able to express what is going on very specifically and clearly. She is able to distinguish the two genders that she experiences very vividly and is able to articulate how she feels being the genders very well. At first I was wondering if this could be a identity factor dealing with being Transgender. I also wondered if it could be dissociative identity disorder because of the clear rapid switching in not only genders but personalities in a way. While explaining Paige’s story it was mentioned that her experiences was possible signs of the disorder. I think Paige’s story could be a unique window on how sex-hormones can have a influence on brain function. There are two types of hormones that have a higher level in each sex. Females main sex-hormone is estrogen while Males are testosterone. It was mentioned that Paige was medically diagnosed with low testosterone levels. So this could easily be viewed as sex-hormones having a influence on brain function and not as much to do with a mental health disorder.

second mate post

think Paige’s story is a valid one, especially after Spiegel did a follow up phone call with Paige over a year later. Paige had explained that she had mostly stopped flipping and that she was primarily a woman. She could not explain how or why this happened, but that the flipping rarely happened and when it did, it took her by surprise. The reason this makes sense to me is because she was on hormones for a longer and more consistent amount of time. The possible flipping after she was primarily a woman could possibly be a result of inconsistencies with her dosage of hormones or other environmental causes, such as when she was in the Navy she may have felt like a male because she may have lifted weights, which produces more testosterone in the body. (Vingren et al., 2010)

b. Explain how sex hormones might explain Paige’s experience. Be sure to include a consideration of critical periods and primary/secondary effects. Is there any specific evidence in her story that supports a hormonal mechanism?

Paige’s experience may be a result of sex hormones during the primary and secondary effects during the critical period. For boys in the womb, estrogen is the sex hormone during the critical period that will masculinize their brain. After the secondary effects, their brain will eventually support the neurological foundation of male sexual behaviors as an adult. (Wetzell, 2021) However, after this period is over, the hormone receptors will shut off and even though the baby is being exposed to hormones, the hormones are not being received. (Wetzell, 2021) In Paige’s case, what may have happened is that her brain received the estrogen while she was in the womb but may not have been exposed to it for as long as most males are, which could explain why when she started injecting hormones, she felt more like a woman than a man on most days.

Your paper should explore the intersection of biology and psychology, so the topic you propose should explicitly denote both a psychological and a biological component. To decide on a topic, I recommend starting with a psychological construct that you’re interested in, then doing a brief literature review to look for biological components of that construct for which you won’t have trouble finding sources.

EXAMPLE: If you’re interested in writing about PTSD (which is a psychological construct), do a quick search of the scientific literature to find a topic (or topics) of interest from current research on the biology of PTSD (please do not simply use a Google search, as it does not restrict results to primary peer-reviewed scientific literature). Example topics might include research on the brain structures involved in PTSD, neurotransmitters that mediate PTSD, genetic or biochemical links to the propensity for developing PTSD, drug treatments for PTSD and their mechanism of action, among many other possibilities– any research related to the biological mechanisms underlying the psychological manifestation of PTSD. Propose a topic that explicitly states both the psychological construct and the biological mechanism(s) you will explore– for example, “Current Drug Treatments for PTSD and How They Change Brain Chemistry to Alleviate Symptoms”, or “PTSD: How it Changes the Brain to Produce its Symptoms”, or similar.

Please do not submit a topic proposal that says simply, for example, “I’d like to write my paper on PTSD”, as this only satisfies HALF of the requirement (you are only stating a psychological component).

Once the assignment due date has passed, I will review your topics and approve them, or make recommendations for revision. If I ask you to revise your topic, please do so via email as soon as possible.

Please also note that you may change or adjust your topic later, for whatever reason, but you should clear any changes with me right away to ensure that I agree the new topic is appropriate.

Turnitin®

Turnitin® enabledThis assignment will be submitted to Turnitin®.

Instructions

Note that all final papers in this class will be automatically evaluated by TurnItIn for similarity to other sources (ie, plagiarism) upon submission!

The TurnItIn database includes published scientific literature, textbooks, and student papers submitted to universities across the globe, including UMGC. For more information about this and the paper requirements, please review the syllabus.

While there is no set requirement for similarity scores, you should shoot for well below 40%, as anything above this score will trigger a one-on-one discussion with me to determine whether you have plagiarized your sources, even if inadvertently.

*You may also revise and re-submit your paper multiple times to improve your similarity score, if needed. I will only evaluate the similarity score of your final submission.

Please review the following information carefully before submitting your paper:

The class project for this course is a written report, that addresses the biological study of a specific behavioral or mental phenomenon (normal or pathological) covered in the readings and videos. Please select a behavioral or mental phenomenon such as language or schizophrenia and then select a biological strategy for investigating it, such as hormonal or genetic mechanisms, neurotransmitters, drug treatments, or localization of brain processes by imaging. The project will be worth a maximum of 100 points.

Written paper. As an example, the theme of your report might be imaging approaches to the study of schizophrenia. Your paper should summarize fundamental issues, questions, and controversies and provide a general overview of the topic using the biological line of investigation you chose. It should also elaborate on your understanding of the brain processes that are revealed through imaging research in schizophrenia. To accomplish this, you will have to use recent research articles (published within the last five years) to illustrate relevant points. You may use any of a number of electronic databases to find research articles that deal with your topic, including the library and the Internet. The one requirement for the research articles that you select is that two of them must have appeared in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. You may wish to consult with the library staff or your faculty member to confirm whether a particular journal is peer-reviewed.

Newspaper or magazine articles should not be used as your major reference, but they are sometimes useful when they lead you to the appropriate research article. You should avoid simply repeating the articles in summary form, but rather use them within the text of your paper to illustrate important points. You are welcome to discuss your choice of topic with your faculty member to make sure you are on the right track.

Turnitin® enabledThis assignment will be submitted to Turnitin®.

Instructions

Task: Identify a news article that discusses a current event or social issue that relates to your field of study. Follow the instructions below to explain the issue, provide an additional example of the issue, connect the issue to your field of study, and pose questions about the issue. See the Assignment 1 Model in Week 2 Content for an example.

Source: One news article, available through the UMGC Library, published within the past 12 months.

Length: Responses to individual questions should follow the guidelines below, and the entire completed assignment should be at least 700 words.

Due date and grading: This assignment is due by the end of Week 2. It will be graded with a rubric and will count for 10% of your course grade. To view the grading rubric, please access the assignment through the Assignments area of the classroom.

Outcomes you should achieve by completing this assignment

As you complete the tasks required for this assignment, you will be working toward several of the course outcomes:

Begin the writing process by exploring a topic (Relates to course outcome 1)

Compose paragraphs that explain an event or issue (Relates to course outcome 2)

Demonstrate accurate grammar and mechanics in writing (Relates to course outcome 3)

Identify a recent and reliable news source and provide APA documentation (Relates to course outcome 4)

Formatting your assignment

Incorporate these elements of APA style:

Use one-inch margins.

Double space.

Use an easy-to-read font between 10-point and 12-point.

Note: Title page is not required, but make sure you include your name and a title that reflects your topic at the top of the first page.

Number your answers and/or include the assignment questions so your instructor can see that you addressed each part of the assignment.

Respond to each of the following.

1. Provide an APA-style reference for the news article you selected. The format for the reference is as follows:

Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of article in sentence case. Title of Newspaper in Title Case and Italics. http://www.newspaperhomepage.com

Although the news article should be available through the UMGC Library, provide the URL directly to the newspaper that published the article. An APA reference entry does not link to a library database record. It does include the URL of the newspaper homepage, such as https://www.washingtonpost.com

2. For your instructor’s reference, provide the URL to the article in the UMGC Library. This will be listed as “Document URL” in the library record:

In the library record, click the Details tab.

From the details tab, copy the Document URL.

3. Summarize the article. Explain the event or issue covered in the article, assuming your reader has little or no prior knowledge of it. Answer in 1-2 paragraphs.

4. Describe a specific real-life situation (other than one discussed in your news article) where the issue at hand has been observed. This could be something that happened to you or someone you know, or it could be a related event in the news. Explain the connection to the event or issue in your news article. Answer in 1-2 paragraphs.

5. What is your field of study and how do you see it relating to the event or issue in your news article? Answer in one paragraph.

6. What do you want to know about the issue or event in your news article? List two or more questions that you could pursue as part of your research. Though you are listing two or more questions here, your research should ultimately be focused on a single guiding question.

A recent risk assessment highlighted the need for Red Clay to formalize the security measures required to protect information, information systems, and the information infrastructures for the company’s headquarters and field offices. The CISO has proposed a plan of action which includes developing system security plans using guidance from NIST SP-800-18 Guide for Developing Security Plans for Federal Information Systems.

The CISO asked you to prepare a two page, draft briefing paper (5-7 paragraphs) for the IT Governance Board and Red Clay Renovations Board of Directors that introduces Security Control Classes and Security Control Families related to Red Clay risks. This audience is familiar with financial controls but has not yet been introduced to the use of controls in the context of IT security. You should leverage their knowledge in your explanations of the control classes and families. If necessary, research “financial controls” as well as IT security controls before writing this briefing paper.

Your draft briefing paper should include the following items:

  1. An introduction telling the IT Governance Board and the Red Clay Board of Directors the purpose of the draft briefing paper.
  2. A description of each control class (managerial, operation, and technical). THEN, write a descriptive paragraph explaining how three these specific control classes will work together to protect the Red Clay Renovations IT Infrastructure for the Wilmington, DE Offices (Headquarters).
  3. From the below table, choose one family control from each of the management, operational, and technical control classes.
  4. Write a description of each family control, THEN write a descriptive paragraph explaining how each family control will work to protect Red Clay’s IT infrastructure.
  5. Select two sub-family controls (i.e., AC1 and AC6) from each family control. THEN, write a descriptive example of how this sub-family-control will protect the Red Clay infrastructure. Your examples should relate to the Red Clay case study.

scenario

Managing file systems, storage, and other hardware devices is critical for a Linux administrator. You’ll put these skills to use as you begin to work on your memo—Phase 2 of the project that will be due next week.

File Systems and Hardware

Faster Computing is a growing company. As such, its technology will need to grow as well. Faster Computing will undoubtedly need to expand file systems—not to mention add new hardware and expand storage. Logical Volume Manager (LVM) will be a critical tool on the file system side. LVM allows an organization to manage storage logically rather than physically. This means that physical disks can be added to or removed from a storage pool on the fly. It greatly simplifies some of the tasks of storage management.

For other hardware, Faster Computing will want to benefit from hot-swap devices. Hot swap allows hardware components that support it to be replaced on the fly if they fail, with no down time. Hot-swap devices can encompass everything from power supplies to hard drives.

Faster Computing was impressed with your presentation. The company is interested in moving forward with the project, but the senior management team has responded to the presentation with the following questions and concerns:

  • How will security be implemented in the Linux systems—both workstations and servers?
  • End users have expressed some concern about completing their day-to-day tasks on Linux. How would activities such as web browsing work? How would they work with their previous Microsoft Office files?
  • The current Windows administrators are unsure about administering Linux systems. How are common tasks, such as process monitoring and management, handled in Linux? How does logging work? Do we have event logs like we do in Windows?
  • Some folks in IT raised questions about the Linux flavor that was recommended. They would like to see comparisons between your recommendation and a couple of other popular options. What makes your recommendation the best option?
  • How does software installation work on Linux? Can we use existing Windows software?
  • How can Linux work together with the systems that will continue to run Windows? How will we share files between the different system types?

This week, your internship assignment takes you to the Corporate Security office, headed by the Chief Security Officer (CSO). This office has recently completed an investigation into how a competitor may have obtained copies of the confidential architectural drawings and design plans for a new type of resort that the company had planned for a recently acquired island property. At least one competitor is known to have received copies of the company’s intellectual property through an economic development office within  its country’s government. It is suspected that an Advanced Persistent Threat mechanism may have been used to exfiltrate information from Padgett-Beale’s existing hotel property within that geo-political jurisdiction. Another competitor, also operating in that geographic area, contacted Padgett-Beale’s Corporate Security Office and disclosed that it had been sent URLs for web pages containing links to the resort plans by an unknown party. The other firm wanted to make it clear to Padgett-Beale that they did not condone nor participate in such illegal and unethical taking or receiving of another company’s intellectual property.

As part of the company’s response to this theft, the CSO’s office has been asked to prepare a background briefing for company’s executives that addresses the problem of protecting intellectual property stored in digital form. The briefing must include recommendations for best practices that the company’s executives should be adopting to prevent / respond to such thefts.

Begin by reading the readings for this week. Then find additional information through your own research.

Write a 2 page summary of your research and analysis for review by the CSO’s senior staff. Your summary should begin by explaining the problem of intellectual property theft. Next, address the reasonable and customary processes and procedures which should be used to discourage or make it difficult for employees, managers, and executives to inadvertently misuse and/or steal the company’s intellectual property (at a minimum, you must address data classification and marking, separation of duties, and least privilege). You should also identify and explain five or more best practices which the company should implement as it responds to this growing problem.

Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Assignment

You have been asked to lead a Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) initiative in a fully paper health record dependent 30-bed facility. Although the purchase and implementation of an EHR are not feasible at this time due to the accompanying price tag and other impacting factors, the hospital administrator recognizes that while the EHR is currently out of reach, developing a CDI program is the first step in the right direction. Revisit your Week 3 “Health Record Documentation Policy” (paper-based record policy only) and Week 4 “Data Quality Beyond Borders: Modernizing Health Information Infrastructure Using AHIMA’s Data Quality Model” assignments that have been critiqued by your Professor. Using both materials from weeks three and four, devise a five (5) to seven (7) page briefing for the Chief of Staff, also known as the Chief Medical Officer, that outlines the below-listed topics.

Deliverables:

  1. Overview/description of the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI)
  2. The benefits of implementing a CDI program
  3. Consequences of not implementing CDI
  4. List and briefly discuss at least six elements of a sound health record from the CDI perspective with emphasis on quality documentation practices – please see my update to this requirement attached to the Week 9 Announcement CDI presentation with assignment instructions
  5. The significant role of physicians as it relates to timely, accurate, complete and legible health record documentation practices and timely response to physician queries within 48-72 hours. Outline the process of the department’s physician query process.
  6. How the HIM department will lead the initiative. How the HIM staff can/will assist the Chief of Staff and the entire pool of practicing physicians?
  7. Include an attachment of your policy and checklist (from weeks three (3) and four (4)) with a brief explanation as an interpretation of both (not counted towards the five to seven-page requirement; attach as appendices)

A. Instructions

Remember the word “argument” does not mean a fight in a writing context. An academic argument is more like a thoughtful conversation between two people with differing viewpoints on a debatable issue. However, you are required to take a position on one side of the issue.

In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the touchstone.

Your submission must include an APA style reference page following the essay. In your research, you will need 2-4 credible primary or secondary sources to use as support in your essay.

On a separate page, below your reference page, include thoughtful answers to the Think About Your Writing questions. References and Think About Your Writing questions are NOT included in the word count for this essay.

B. Think About Your Writing

Below your reference page, include answers to all of the following reflection questions.

1. What have you learned about how to present a strong argument? How could/will you apply this knowledge in your professional or everyday life (3-4 sentences)? Sophia says: Think about the specific skills and techniques that you used while developing and writing your essay. What tools will you take with you from this experience?

2. Consider the English Composition I course as a whole. What have you learned about yourself as a writer (5-6 sentences)? Sophia says: What did you learn that surprised you? Is there anything that you have struggled with in the past that you now feel more confident about?

Growth mindset is a concept you can apply in your academics and on the job. It’s also a way to approach day-to-day life. Here are some examples of everyday situations in which you can consciously choose to respond with a growth mindset.

Example 1: Your morning is full of the unexpected. You hit the snooze button too many times, resulting in waking up late for work. As you rush to get out the door to your job, you accidentally spill your coffee and have to take time to clean up the mess. Since you left your home later than usual, traffic is moving at a snail’s pace. A fixed mindset response would be grumbling about your crummy morning. A growth mindset response would be committing to waking up earlier and devising a more effective morning routine.

Example 2: Most people like to be winners, and kids on sports teams are no exception. So when your daughter, who spent tireless hours in the backyard practicing her jump shot, makes 10 out of 15 shots—leading her basketball team in scoring on game day—you can praise her by giving a fixed mindset response or a growth mindset response. A fixed mindset response would be “Great game! You’re a spectacular athlete!” A growth mindset response, by contrast, would be “Great game! Your dedication, practice, and hard work were reflected in your performance tonight.”

In the Discussion forum, share some examples of how you can apply growth mindset in your daily interactions, either in a professional setting or in your academics. Here are some prompts to address if you need some ideas:

  • How do you handle a new project or task at work, home, or school?
  • How do you embrace working in groups when you prefer to work independently?
  • How would you react to your instructor’s suggestion to incorporate a data component into an assignment for your non-math-related course?
  • What do you do when you don’t understand something that everyone around you seems to have caught onto?

This part of the final project is a summary of your ongoing work on the final paper; it should include three paragraphs, one covering each selected work. You should also make sure to re-state what your subject is.

Identify how the subject you chose in Part 1 appears in three different examples, each from a different Humanities discipline (visual art, music, dance, poetry, prose, theater, film, religion). For instance, you could choose a poem, a painting and a scene from a film, all of which express and represent the theme of anger. Or, to be even more specific, if you choose the emotion of “love,” the final paper could analyze and discuss love as it is expressed in Shakespeare’s Sonnet 147 (literature), Boticelli’s Birth of Venus (visual art), and in the ballet Swan Lake (dance).

Write one short paragraph (3-5 sentences) about each of your selections in which you:

  • Identify a reliable and appropriate example (a good-quality image, recording, video, etc.).
  • Identify and cite the source, including the artist, creator etc. as well as where you found the example.
  • Explain why you find the example relevant for this assignment.
  • Identify one tool, concept or method from the Learning Resources you might be able to use to talk about it.

STOP: Before you hand in your assignment, make sure to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Have I chosen three examples from three different fields of the Humanities?
  2. Are each of the examples I chose specific, reliable, appropriate, relevant to my topic?
  3. Have I offered an explanation for each example that offers a reason for including it?
  4. Have I provided a specific and appropriate interpretative tool, concept or method that I will likely use to interpret each example?
  5. Have I provided a list of resources and do all of my citations conform to MLA 8th edition guidelines?
  6. Have I proofread this assignment for grammatical, structural, and spelling errors that might impede someone from understanding what I am trying to say?
  7. (THIS IS THE FIRST PART OF MY PROJECT) LOVE The topic I have chosen for my final project is “Love”. I choose to write about Love because for many people it’s an unanswered question “Why do we love?”. All human beings know is that in our lifetime we fall in love a few times, but we never get to find out why. There are many theories out there on why we fall in love, all we know is that we fall in love with some people but not everyone. We know love is feelings, fulfillment, commitment, trust etc. In my paper I am determined to explain why we fall in love from different point of view and perspectives. One of the most impactful things in our world is love. I will explore all the myths and stories of why human beings have the need to love and be loved by another.

Week 2 – This week you are studying acids and bases as you study the chemistry of biology. The measure of the alkalinity (how basic) or acidity (how acidic) of a fluid is accomplished through the use of the pH scale.  Substances that are acidic measure between 0 and 7, while basic substances measure between 7 and 14.  Substances that measure 7 on the pH scale are neither acidic nor basic – they are considered to be neutral.

The billions of the cells that make up the human body are slightly alkaline. The normal pH for human bodies is between 7.35 and 7.45.   The pH levels of our internal body fluids affects every cell in our bodies.  The entire metabolic process depends on a slightly alkaline environment.

An acidic diet, lack of physical exercise, psychological stresses constitute the basis of our modern lifestyle. This unhealthy lifestyle causes acidosis or body over-acidity. Acidosis is a very dangerous condition and it weakens all of our body systems by interrupting all cellular activities and functions. It leads to a general autotoxication of our bodies that gives rise to an internal environment that is conducive to disease.  As such, it is a leading cause of many chronic degenerative diseases. Below is a list of ailments that are rooted in acidosis.

Acid reflux

Cancer

Heart disease

Obesity

Acne

Chronic fatigue

High blood pressure

Osteoporosis

Allergies

Chronic inflammation

Hypercholesterol

Periodontitis

Arteriosclerosis

Diabetes

Immune deficiency

Premature aging

Arthritis

Eczema

Kidney stones

Prostatitis

Bladder conditions

Fungal infections

Mood swings

Underweight

Bronchitis

Headaches

Neuritis

Yeast infections

For this discussion, please do the following:

1. Choose one of the diseases from the list.

2. Conduct research on the disease you have chosen and using layman’s terms, please discuss in full how acidosis or an acidic body pH leads to the condition you chose.

3. Discuss conventional methods for treating the condition you chose.

4. Offer a reason for why most medical doctors may not consider the pH of patients as both the basis and thus cure for the disease state you have chosen.

Writing Assignment #3
Instructions – Writing a Recipe
Summary of the Assignment:
• Task: In this assignment, you will write a set of instructions for Alice, a friend of yours.
The scenario for this situation is described below.
• Length: There is no minimum or maximum word count. However, your instructions
must have 15 or more steps.
o This does not mean that you need 15 main steps. Some steps can be nested under
other steps. More information on this strategy is given in the resources provided
in the class on writing steps for instructions.
• Graphics: You should include at least 7 original graphics.
o Graphics should not be borrowed from other sources. All graphics should be
original.
If your situation precludes you from obtaining original graphics for the recipe, you
may borrow photos from websites and cite them. Please inform your instructor if this
is your situation.
o All graphics should be labeled
The Scenario
Your friend, Alice, has contacted you for help.
Alice lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is engaged to be married in two months. Her fiancé,
Tony, lives in New York City.
Tony’s parents live in Salem, Oregon, and have never met Alice.
Next week, Tony’s parents are coming to Minneapolis for a work-related meeting. Alice has
arranged to have Tony’s parents over to her apartment for dinner while Tony’s parents are in
Minneapolis.
When Tony’s parents visit Alice in Minneapolis, Tony will not be there. The dinner will be
only the three of them—Alice, Tony’s father, and Tony’s mother.
Alice is a bit nervous about the visit. She wants to impress her future in-laws with a dinner she
will cook. However, Alice does not typically cook. She usually goes out for food when she
needs to have a meal.
Alice has asked you for help. She would like you to write a recipe that she can follow, a recipe
for a dish that she would feel confident serving Tony’s parents during their visit.
Brief Description and Strategies to Follow:
You must include the following:
• A brief introduction to Alice about why she would want to make this dish for her fiancé’s
parents.
• A list of ingredients
o Remember, this is a meal for three people. You want your instructions to be
specific for approximately three people.
o Note that Alice does not typically cook. She might not understand what certain
terms mean (e.g., the difference between tablespoon and teaspoon, the meaning of
au gratin, etc.).
• A list of equipment needed
• The instructions
o Number all the main steps, as the resources for the class indicate
o Provide a graphic for steps of the instructions that need a graphic
o Remember that Alice does not typically cook. She might not understand what
certain terms mean (e.g., broiling, baking, roasting, al dente, sauté, etc.)
• Warnings or statements of caution integrated throughout the set of instructions.
o Remember that Alice does not typically cook. She might not know basic safety
tips involved in using an oven, handling a chopping knife, etc.

This week, your internship rotation takes you to the company’s IT Department where you’ve been asked to help prepare a short presentation for one of the company’s Brown Bag Lunch training events. This training event will be attended primarily by business professionals who have familiarity with information technology but at a very high level; the attendees use IT to perform their jobs on a daily basis.

For this 10 minute presentation, you should focus upon meeting the information needs of the attendees from the internal (business) organizations which are supported by the IT department. You should also anticipate questions which your audience might ask during the 10 minute Question & Answer period which follows your presentation. (When you write your peer critiques for this week — ask and then answer at least one question that you believe the audience is likely to ask.)

Choose one of the following articles to present to the attendees.

1. Selecting the Right Cloud Operating Model: Privacy and Data Security in the Cloud

2. Understanding Managed Services (focus on the benefits of Managed IT Services)

3. Shadow IT: Mitigating Security Risks

After reading the article, prepare a set of slides (talking points) with speaker notes in which you highlight key information about the article and why Padgett-Beale employees should “care” about the topic. Make the presentation relevant for Padgett-Beale by integrating information about its business operations (use the company profile, the weekly descriptions, and other readings in this course). At least one of your slides should address cybersecurity issues and concerns that arise in the context of your chosen article (use the CSCU textbook’s material and other course readings to help you identify these issues and concerns).

You should have a title slide, a slide containing the article title & publication information, content slides, and a summary slide — 8 to 12 slides total. At the end of the presentation, include a Q&A slide followed by “backup” slide which has additional resources that the audience can consult for more information.

Project 1: Migration Proposal Presentation

Hide Assignment Information
Turnitin® enabledThis assignment will be submitted to Turnitin®.

Faster Computing has contacted Go2Linux and requested a brief proposal presentation for migrating its systems from Windows to Linux.

The company is specifically interested in seeing the following information:

(10.1.1: Identify the problem to be solved.)

  • Based on your current understanding of Faster Computing’s business, what are some potential benefits of Linux?
  • The company is aware that many different Linux derivatives exist. Be very specific and choose only one version (e.g., Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Redhat, CentOS, Kali). Which would Go2Linux recommend, and why? Give specific reasons for your choice (e.g., security features, support, updates, user interface).

(10.1.2: Gather project requirements to meet stakeholder needs.)

  • What steps will be required to migrate the systems from Windows to Linux?
  • Are there graphical interfaces available for the Linux workstations that would provide similar functionality to Windows? Some users are concerned about working with a command-line interface.

(10.1.3: Define the specifications of required technologies.)

  • What tools are available on Linux for the servers to provide file sharing, Linux services, and printing? (e.g., Apache/Nginx, Samba, CUPS, SSH/SCP). Ensure you identify what the functions/services are used for (e.g., Samba is used for file sharing).

(1.1.3: Present ideas in a clear, logical order appropriate to the task.)

The deliverable for this phase of the project is a three- to five-slide PowerPoint narrated presentation.

  • An introductory slide
  • A summary slide
  • Voice narration on every slide

For each slide, you will embed your own audio recording as if you were presenting the content to the Faster Computing team. Faster Computing has not yet committed to the project, so this should be presented as a proposal. The presentation should be visually appealing; the inclusion of at least one image that supports the content and adds value to the proposal is required.

(1.3.3: Integrate appropriate credible sources to illustrate and validate ideas.)

You must cite at least two quality sources.

You used at least 2 references and your references were cited properly following an accepted style. Ask your instructor for clarification.

Use the Migration Proposal Presentation template to get started.

(2.3.1: State conclusions or solutions clearly and precisely.)

You should present your proposal as if you are selling to the company. Revisit all of these important reasons in the summary slide.

How Will My Work Be Evaluated?

As you progress in your IT career, you may find yourself making presentations to customers, client audiences, and professional peers. By creating an effective presentation, you are showing how you use your technical knowledge and convey your ideas to others in a professional setting, an important workplace skill.

The following evaluation criteria aligned to the competencies will be used to grade your assignment:

  • 1.1.3: Present ideas in a clear, logical order appropriate to the task.

I’m working on a humanities discussion question and need support to help me study.

I watched Romeo & Juliet (1996) and the two scenes I chose to write about are the secret wedding between the 2 and them dying at the end of the movie. I think these are significant because they play 2 major parts in the movie that are really important to the characters themselves and the families. When they got married, they did it in secret because the families did not like each other so them marrying each other was out of the question. They were young and so in love, they wanted to be together so bad, the only way to be together was to get secretly married. The other scene that is so significant is them dying at the end. This is huge because it shows how much they really love each other. It shows that their love dies with each other in both the movie and play. Even though in the play she stabs herself to death and in the movie she shoots herself, they both show love and death one in the same. ONE RESPONSE TO THIS ONE!

I chose to write about the play “Taming of the Shrew”, and the movie “10 Things I Hate About You”. One scene that I noticed appeared in both was in the movie when Cameron first saw Bianca, he quoted the line from the play, “I burn, I pine, I parish”,(Shakespeare) which expresses his feelings of love at first sight. I feel the film portrayed this scene very well because of the way the music changed and motion slowed when he saw her and the camera focused in on his reactions made emphasized on how he was feeling. The film lets us see Bianca through Cameron’s point of view to focus in on how he views her. In the play, this same scene is when Lucentio sees Bianca, he says to Tranio, “I burn, I pine, I perish, Tranio, If I achieve not this young modest girl. Counsel me, Tranio, for I know thou canst; Assist me, Tranio, for I know thou wilt.” I feel he is also describing his love at first sight, and asking Tranio for help to marry her. I feel this is significant to the overall story because this is the entire plot of both the movie and play.

Another scene from the movie is when the girls’ father doesn’t allow Bianca to date until her older sister Kat dates, knowing Kat’s personality and that she has no interest in dating. I feel the film portrayed this scene well because he has established this rule and made it very clear. This scene can also be viewed as an example of exposition because it is laying out important story events and make up the character traits of the father, and characteristics of the relationship between the two sisters. In the play this same scene is displayed when Baptista says “Gentlemen, importune me no farther, For how I firmly am resolved you know That is, not to bestow my youngest daughter Before I have a husband for the elder. If either of you both love Katherina, Because I know you well and love you well Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.” (Shakespeare) He is saying that his younger daughter cannot marry until the older daughter marries. This scene is significant to the overall story because again, this makes up the entire plot.

I feel the play was adapted to the contemporary world through the movie in which the father’s relationship he had with his daughters, and being an over protective parent. The love at first sight was portrayed through young high schoolers falling in love. The film has had so many adaptations from the play to give 90’s kids something to relate to. Young love and overbearing parents are things a lot of people experience. AND ONE RESPONSE TO THIS ONE!

Special COVID19 instructions: Because of the risks associated with the outbreak of COVID19, all Oral History interviews should be performed remotely, unless you are interviewing someone you already see in person daily. “Remote” modes of interview can include email, telephone, and videoconferencing (FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc.). Please post to the Questions for the Professor discussion if you have any questions. This requirement should remain in place until there is a general consensus worldwide that the risks associated with the virus have been downgraded.

Due: Week 2 in Assignments by Tuesday, 11:59pm

100 points; 10% of course grade

Learning from other women is a major component of Women’s Studies scholarship. Through Oral Histories (interviews that record the history of a person), we can learn about the experiences of other women, and then analyze these experiences in terms of what we know about Women’s Studies.

For the major project in this course, you will conduct an interview with a woman whose background differs from yours (she might be older, younger, of a different ethnic group, has children, does not, a different religion, etc.). You will need to design the questions for your interview based on the concerns and topics we are studying in this course. Later, you will write an 800-1200 word (3-4 pages) report in which you analyze the interview you conducted in relationship to what you have learned in Women’s Studies.

For the assignment due this week, you will begin by planning your interview.

Project Plan Requirements

Decide whom you will interview for your project (and why), and then submit a two paragraph Project Plan:

The first paragraph should name the subject you have chosen and explain why you believe she will make a good interview subject for a Women’s Studies Oral History. This paragraph should include some discussion of the Women’s Studies topics you plan to bring up in the interview. (50 points)

The second paragraph should describe your plan for conducting the interview, including the when/where/how of the process. Also explain what your backup plan is in the case that your original choice of person to interview is unavailable or changes her mind. (50 points)

Confused? Post a question about the Oral History Project to the Ask the Professor discussion.

Because of the risks associated with the outbreak of COVID19, all Oral History interviews from this point forward should be performed remotely, unless you are interviewing someone you already see in person daily. “Remote” modes of interview can include email, telephone, and videoconferencing (FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc.). Please post to the Ask the Professor discussion if you have any questions.

Due: Week 6 in Assignments by Tuesday, 11:59pm

100 points; 10% of course grade

300-400 words

Interview and Learning Resources Summary Requirements

In order to complete this assignment, you need to have completed your interview, decided on which Women’s Studies topics your report will cover, and identified supporting material in the learning resources.

See below for information on how to conduct your interview.

You can find a sample Interview and Learning Resources Summary attached to this assignment in the Assignments folder. Please note that the Learning Resources cited in the sample summary may not be part of your WMST 200 classroom. Choose resources assigned in your own section of WMST 200. You can also find the rubric for this assignment in the Assignments folder.

Your Interview and Learning Resources Summary includes the following two sections:

A one-paragraph summary of your interview experience (40 points).

introduce your subject in a sentence or two

briefly discuss how the interview proceeded (you can expand this in your final essay; a couple of sentences are fine here)

briefly present the major Women’s Studies topics you covered (you do not have to list everything that will appear in the final paper)

A list of items from the learning resources you have identified which will provide supporting scholarly information for your discussion of the interview (60 points).

Your list should be formatted as a brief Annotated Bibliography in APA Style:

Include three (3) acceptable items from the learning resources (18 points)

For the purposes of this assignment, “an item” may be an entire learning resource, a section of a learning resource, or a direct quote from a learning resource.

Stronger projects will select items from more than one learning resource, though three different quotes from the same highly-relevant learning resource meets the minimum requirements for this assignment.

Provide a brief summary under each item explaining how it will be useful for your essay (30 points).

Provides the APA style bibliographic citation for each item (12 points).

Publication information for the Course Modules can be found where assigned in Content, and here: Content > Course Resources > Read Me First > Development Credits

Citation Guides for APA styles at the UMGC Library

Conducting the Interview

You can conduct the interview in any medium (in person, on the phone/Skype, via email, etc.). It can also be done in multiple sessions or all at one sitting. You do need some way to record the interview so that you can quote from it. If you conduct it via email, you’ll have a print copy. If you do it in person, take plenty of notes, but also try to make a sound recording if possible so that you can find the exact responses.

You may design your interview questions however you wish, but keep the purpose of the project in mind. Tailor your questions to your specific interview subject and your own interests. You DO NOT have to use the questions below; these are just sample questions covering some of the major topics of the course: the history of the women’s movement, feminism, gender identity, women and work, women and politics, education, body politics (body image and media).

Suggestions for topics and questions:

How has being female affected your life?

What do you know about the history of the women’s movement? How do you think it has affected you?

Do you consider yourself a feminist?

What do you want your children to learn about women? About gender roles?

How have your ideas about what it means to be a woman changed as you have gotten older?

What do you think about the way female celebrities/movie stars/singers are portrayed?

How did you feel about Hillary Clinton’s presidential run? About the first female four-star general?

Is it any different being female in the United States than in your (your parents’) home country (if you’re interviewing someone from another country)?

What do you feel are the most important issues for women (or for the women’s movement today)?

Has being a woman affected your work life or career goals in any way?

How is the housework/childcare divided in your home? Are you satisfied with this arrangement?

What do you think about laws protecting women in the workplace and women’s access to education? Do we have too many? Not enough? If you could enact a new law to help women, what would it be?

Tips for the actual interview:

Most people enjoy being taken seriously as interview subjects – choose someone you’re genuinely interested in learning more about.

Explain why you are conducting the interview, and let the person know what to expect. You can even provide some of the questions ahead of time if you’d like to.

Begin with easy questions that will make both of you comfortable and give you basic background information (name, age, where from, education, etc.).

Create a list of at least ten questions you’d like to ask that cover a range of topics.

Be willing to let the conversation take you away from those questions, and then redirect when you have a chance.

Try to avoid questions that can be answered “yes” or “no;” instead, ask open-ended questions that require a lengthier response.

Rather than: were you ever called a tomboy when you were growing up?

Try: How did you see yourself when you were a child? Were you more of a “girly-girl” or a “tomboy?” Then you can follow up on the answer to this question: Why do you think you felt that way? Do you still think of yourself as more …

Be sensitive to your subject’s reactions to a question; if she really doesn’t want to answer something, move on …

… but, remember the purpose of the project, and be sure to cover the topics that are most important to you.

Today’s companies face many security challenges to their networks, and a company’s incident manager needs to be ready to respond to potential threats. Some of those threats can occur from the actions of well-intentioned employees who fail to follow security protocols, and others can arise from disgruntled workers who may be able to access accounts on personal devices long after leaving an organization.

Wireless devices and bring your own device (BYOD) computing in the workplace often increase productivity and convenience, but such ease of access to resources can be a significant threat to organizational security, and BYOD computing adds another layer of concern for the incident manager.

Remote management, such as tracking and data swipes, helps to locate devices containing company data and to eliminate any unauthorized viewing of that data. Authentication, access controls, and strong encryption are just some of the security measures that need to be part of a secure wireless network and mobile device management practices in the workplace. However, security will need to evolve in order to protect against employees who may have malicious intent. It will need to include behavior cues as well as effective countermeasures, as the need for greater employee availability drives more wireless computing and BYOD integration in the workplace.

For this project, you will take a close look at the variety of threats facing an incident manager as you develop a cybersecurity incident report (CIR) for management with an executive summary.

There are seven steps to complete the project. Each step will highlight the types of threats you will encounter. Most steps in this project should take no more than two hours to complete, and the project as a whole should take no more than two weeks. Begin with the workplace scenario and then continue to Step 1.

Deliverables

  • Cybersecurity Incident Report (CIR): Your report should be a minimum 12-page double-spaced Word document with citations in APA format. The page count does not include figures, diagrams, tables, or citations.
  • Executive summary: This is a one-page summary at the beginning of your CIR.

A. Instructions

Choose a topic that enables you to tell a short, interesting personal story. Your story can be funny, suspenseful, meaningful, or exciting, but it must focus on one event. For example, if you decide to write about traveling to Denmark, you should not write about the entire trip. Choose one event (e.g., an afternoon you spent bicycling on an island, or your first taste of smoked herring, or your visit to the childhood home of Hans Christian Anderson) and tell a detailed story that focuses on that event.

The following are some ideas that can help you to select a topic for your story:

  • Firsts: Think of a “first” in your life and describe that moment in detail.
  • Proud Moment: Choose a moment when you felt proud about an accomplishment.
  • Adversity: Describe a time when you had to think or act quickly to overcome a challenge.
  • Travel: Recall a memorable experience you had while visiting an interesting place.

B. Think About Your Writing

Below your completed narrative, include answers to all of the following reflection questions:

1. Which narrative techniques did you use to bring your story to life? (2-3 sentences) Sophia says: Did you use vivid description, sensory details, and/or dialogue to engage readers? Provide two examples from your essay in which you “show” readers rather than “tell” them. EXAMPLE: A sentence such as “I glanced at the clock, grabbed my briefcase, and sprinted for the elevator” uses more descriptive language than simply saying, “I was running late for the meeting.”

2. How did your purpose and audience shape the way in which you wrote your narrative? (3-4 sentences) Sophia says: Your hypothetical audience extends beyond the people who will evaluate your narrative. Which individuals or groups were you addressing when you wrote your narrative, and how did consideration of your audience and your purpose influence the way in which you wrote it?

3. Provide a concrete example from your narrative that shows how you have written specifically for this audience and purpose. (3-5 sentences) Sophia says: Consider including a quotation from your essay and explaining how it was written to appeal to your audience, and to accomplish your purpose. Alternatively, you might describe a theme, tone, or narrative technique that you used and explain how it was intended to appeal to your audience and achieve your purpose.

Perform Migration

Now that you have completed BallotOnline’s Cloud Deployment Programmatic Approach, you have a better understanding of the available programmatic cloud deployment approaches and options, and how these approaches differ from traditional IT deployment approaches. You are now prepared to perform activities to migrate workloads to the cloud infrastructure.

Your supervisor, Sophia, the vice president of Information Technology (IT), has tasked you with the migration of workloads to the cloud infrastructure and has selected the migration of a database that is part of a critical aspect of BallotOnline’s operation. You are also asked to migrate the corporate intranet to the public cloud. You will now evaluate and compare different data migration approaches and select the best approach for BallotOnline, along with your rationale for selecting the specific approach and tool set.

As always, your selection of the appropriate approach and tool set must incorporate industry best practices and standards and meet the relevant business and technical needs of the organization.

There are seven steps in this project.

Also, there are 3 discussions (Discussion: Data Migration Approaches + Discussion: Evaluation of AWS Database Migration Service + Discussion: Database Migration Options to AWS) these discussions need to be answer in a separate document.

Step 1: Research Industry Standard Data Migration Approaches

Professionals in the Field

“Data migration is the process of making an exact copy of an organization’s current data from one device to another device—preferably without disrupting or disabling active applications—and then redirecting all input/output (I/O) activity to the new device.”

—Best Practices for Data Migration, IBM

Part of BallotOnline’s cloud strategy includes keeping up with the latest developments in the industry and applying current best practices. So, before getting started with the migration, take some time to research best practices and industry standard data migration approaches.

Discussion: Data Migration Approaches.

Now that you have completed BallotOnline’s Cloud Deployment Programmatic Approach, you will discuss the data migration approaches. You should cover the following areas:

  • Why migrate your data?
  • What levels of attention should each workload get?
  • What migration design would you prefer?
  • What are the migration execution strategies?
  • How would you transition postmigration?

Step 2: Review and Compare Data Migration Tool Sets

Now that you have reviewed and discussed best practices and industry standard data migration approaches, review a few of the leading migration tools.

There are two basic approaches to data migration: “lift and shift” and “create new.”

Approach

What’s Involved

Tool Set Used

Lift and Shift

Also known as rehosting, lift and shift involves replicating current applications in the cloud without redesign, enabling users to migrate their existing servers along with the data.

AWS Server Migration Service

Create New

This method involves creating new servers in the cloud as needed, and only replicating the data to the cloud.

AWS Database Migration Services

Review the two toolsets: AWS Server Migration Service and AWS Database Migration Services, and compare them in the Cloud Data Migration Tool Sets Comparison Template.

Before completing the whole project Submit the Cloud Data Migration Tool Set Comparison Template completed with your findings.

Step 3: Explore and Evaluate AWS Database Migration Service

Sophia favors the “create new” approach, since this aligns to industry best practices. Not surprisingly, she wants to use as many AWS-owned services as possible because AWS is the cloud vendor of choice for BallotOnline thus far in the organization’s move to the cloud.

Before evaluating databases for migration, make sure you understand the tool set of choice for BallotOnline’s cloud data migration, AWS Database Migration Service, so you can use it effectively and educate other team members if needed.

Take Action

To make sure you understand the tool set and how it is used, answer the Discussion: Evaluation of AWS Database Migration Service. Then proceed to the next step, in which you will consider options within AWS for the migration.

Discussion: Evaluation of AWS Database Migration Service

Now that you have discussed the data migration approaches, you will discuss and evaluate AWS Database Migration Service (DMS). You should cover the following areas:

How is AWS DMS different from other database migration tool sets?

How are AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) and AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) related?

What sources and targets does AWS Database Migration Service support?

What are the security features supported by AWS DMS?

Step 4: Review Options for Database Migration to AWS

Sophia has asked you to migrate two of BallotOnline’s on-premise database environments to the cloud: the human resources database. There are different options for different source database types. Human resources uses a MySQL database instance.

Review the following three options for database migration to AWS:

  • Migrating from an RDS MySQL database instance to AWS
  • Migrating from a MySQL database external to Amazon RDS to AWS
  • Migrating from a database that is not MySQL-compatible to AWS

Take Action

Answer the Discussion: Database Migration Options to AWS, and then proceed to the next step, in which you will move data from human resources.

Discussion: Database Migration Options to AWS

Now that you have discussed the AWS Database Migration Service, you will discuss the migration options available via AWS Database Migration Service (DMS). You should cover the following areas:

What sources does AWS DMS support?

What targets does AWS DMS support?

How does AWS DMS support encrypted data?

How does AWS DMS support on-premise to AWS data migration?

How does AWS DMS support AWS RDS to other AWS database services?

Step 5: Migrate Data from a MySQL Database to AWS

Now that you have finished researching approaches, tool sets, and options, you can start the migration process. In this step, you will migrate BallotOnline’s human resources data from the external MySQL database to an Amazon Aurora MySQL database.

Check Your Knowledge

You may want to review the following Qwiklabs activities on how to migrate data from a MySQL database to AWS:

Take Action

Follow the detailed migration instructions in the MySQL Database Migration Guide.

The basic steps are:

  • Step 1: Deploy a Replication Instance
  • Step 2: Deploy Source and Destination Endpoints
  • Step 3: Create Migration Task
  • Step 4: Complete Database Migration

Make sure you take screenshots for each task since the screenshots will be used in your final Cloud Migration Technical Report.

Once you’ve migrated the database to Amazon Aurora MySQL and saved screenshots, move to the next step, in which you will migrate the payroll database.

Step 6: Perform Private Hyper-V Cloud Migration to AWS

In the previous step, you migrated BallotOnline’s HR resources MySQL database to Amazon Aurora MySQL. Now, you will complete the migration of BallotOnline’s other servers to the AWS public cloud. This operation includes moving BallotOnline’s Hyper-V server, which hosts its intranet, FTP server, and Network Time Protocol (NTP) server.

Note that a server running Microsoft Hyper-V is considered a private cloud. Other software for private cloud includes vSphere, OpenStack, and Xen. You may want to go back to Cloud Deployment Models to review the differences between public, private, and hybrid cloud.

Take Action

Follow the Private Cloud Migration Lab Guide for detailed instructions on how to perform the private cloud migration to AWS using Server Migration Service (SMS).

The basic steps are:

  • Create a role for the migration and name it SMS. This role will be used in the next step.
  • Create and complete the replication job in Server Migration Service. This step will create an AMI (Amazon Machine Image) off the migrated server.
  • Deploy an EC2 instance using the AMI from Step 3 above to verify the migration.

Take screenshots for each step since they will be used in your final Cloud Migration Technical Report.

Don’t forget to clean up the AWS resources to avoid any charges.

Step 7: Write the Final Cloud Deployment Programmatic Approach Document

Now that you have migrated both databases, your Cloud Migration Technical Report will consolidate the work that you have completed in the steps along with some additional elements (scope, executive summary, etc.).

This report will provide BallotOnline with a comprehensive cloud migration approach and tool sets that align with BallotOnline’s technical and business requirements. The final document should be between eight and 10 pages. Sophia will present your work for approval at the executive meeting.

Padgett-Beale’s Chief Privacy Officer has invited you to “shadow” the company’s internal investigators as they look into a privacy problem that was uncovered in the Resort Operations organization (see “Background Information” at the end of this message). Your recent experience working in that organization is viewed as a plus since you may have seen or heard something during your time in Resort Operations and Guest Relations.

The CPO has also asked you to assist with identifying a set of appropriate and relevant updates to the company’s internal training program for staff members with access to guest information. The goal of these updates should be to strengthen the training provided to staff so that they understand (a) the importance of maintaining guest privacy and (b) the consequences that may be imposed upon staff who are found to have violated company rules and policies regarding guest privacy.

To begin, read the Background Information section below. Then consult the course readings and do additional research into the privacy, data security, and liability issues surrounding the stated privacy problem.  Next, identify 3 to 5 specific recommendations for appropriate and relevant updates to the Guest Relations staff training program. Remember to focus your research and recommendations upon the hospitality industry (specifically hotels).

Background Information

Special requests from guests are entered into the reservation database for use by front desk, concierge, housekeeping, and maintenance personnel. Food service personnel may also need to access this information in order to address special dietary needs. Guests may enter the information themselves using a web-based form or a call center operator may enter it on a guest’s behalf.

The Chief Privacy Officer recently became aware of a disturbing practice in which anonymous staffers have been posting “outrageous guest requests” under the “Humor” section of employee bulletin boards in the Resort Operations staff locker rooms. Some of these postings have included guest names and room numbers along with names and ages of children. This practice is a shocking violation of guests’ privacy and could seriously harm the company’s reputation if the practice were to continue. The bulletin boards have been moved to the semi-public hallway outside the locker rooms as a first step towards stopping this behavior.

A deeper investigation into the situation revealed that the recently revised guest relations privacy policy has strong protections in place that detail (a) who is allowed to access guest information and (b) the permitted uses of guest information. The consequences for violations, as listed in the policy, range from a two-week suspension without pay to termination of employment.

For examples of guest privacy policies, please see these resources:

1. https://www.lhw.com/Privacy-Policy

2. https://www.tajhotels.com/en-in/about-taj-group/legal/privacy-policy/

3. https://www.fourseasons.com/privacy/

Note: for the purposes of writing your discussion response and critiques, you may assume that Padgett-Beale’s guest privacy policy is substantially similar to one or more of the above example policies.

Touchstone 2.2: Informative Essay Draft

ASSIGNMENT: Select one of the following writing prompts and draft a 3-5 page (approximately 800-1300 words) informative essay. As a part of your completed draft, complete the color coding activity described below. In addition, answer the “Think About Your Writing” questions on a separate sheet of paper and include it with your draft submission.

A. Instructions

Choose one of the following prompts for your informative essay.

PROMPT A: IMAGE ANALYSIS: Although we look at print advertisements every day, we often do not consider the ways in which they affect us. Visual images in ads can influence and persuade us, so it is important to evaluate them critically to understand their meanings. Good image analysis involves examination of the components of an image to gain an understanding of the whole.

Select an advertisement to analyze. The advertisement you choose should be directed towards a specific audience. To identify the intended audience, think about the members of the potential audience for the advertisement that you have chosen. Who are they? Ads for a beauty product, for example, may be aimed at young girls; ads for a deodorant might target men; a diaper commercial is likely intended for new parents; ads for cruise trips might be aimed at retirees. You can use any academically-appropriate advertisement to complete this assignment, as long as its intended audience is clearly identified.

Your thesis must inform the reader of your topic and purpose. Because you are writing in the informative mode, use objective language and a neutral point of view.

Draft an analytical essay that examines the audience, context, and purpose of the advertising image you’ve chosen. Read the article by Jenna Pack titled “Breaking Down an Image” found in the “Model Informative Essays tutorial for ideas about how to write an image analysis. Your analysis should lead to a conclusion about the ad’s effectiveness, based on examination of its components. Include the image with your draft.

OR

PROMPT B: EXTENDED DEFINITION: Define or redefine one of the following words:

  • Family
  • Success
  • Courage

In your draft, briefly explain how society, or the dictionary, defines the word you’ve selected, and then explain your unique or extended definition of the word. Provide examples and explanations to support your definition. Your thesis must inform your readers of your new definition and, because you are writing in the informative mode, you must use objective language.

Draft an extended definition essay that defines or redefines a word or concept. Read the article by Dan Richards titled “Digital Ethics” found in the “Model Informative Essays tutorial for ideas about how to write an extended definition essay.

B. Think About Your Writing

As a part of your completed draft, complete the color coding activity and include answers to all of the questions below your draft.

PART 1: Color Coding Activity

Using the color codes provided, evaluate your draft as follows:

  • Use red text to indicate your thesis statement.
  • Use green text to indicate the topic sentence of each body paragraph.

PART 2: Questions

1. What is the significance of your essay? Why should readers care about what you have written? (2-3 sentences) Sophia says: Think about why you decided to analyze this particular image, or why you picked the word you chose to define. Your interest in in your subject matter should be clear to readers.

2. Which areas of your draft do you think will benefit most from revision? (2-3 sentences) Sophia says: Consider the organization, style, focus, development, and conventions of your draft. Which areas did you struggle to complete?

3. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of your writing. How can you capitalize on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses in future essays? (3-4 sentences) Sophia says: Think about what was easy about writing the draft, and what was more difficult. For example, if you write paragraphs with strong topic sentences, but repeatedly use the same type of sentence to provide supporting details, you can improve your paragraphs by varying sentence structure.

Touchstone: Did Jim and Laura Buy a Car?

SCENARIO: Jim and Laura Buyer visit the local car dealership because they are interested in buying a new car. The car they currently have is aging and is starting to have mechanical problems. Jim and Laura would share the new car, and use it to go back and forth to work and school. Before going to the dealership, Jim and Laura decide that they can only afford $400.00 a month in car payments.

Once at the car dealership, Jim and Laura meet Stan Salesman. Stan shows them several vehicles and Jim and Laura test-drive several of the cars. Jim and Laura particularly like the blue 4-door sedan. Therefore, they agree to give Stan Salesman a $100.00 deposit to hold the car for a day. Stan Salesman does not give them the receipt but guarantees that the $100.00 is refundable. No documents were signed.

The next day, Stan Salesman calls Jim and Laura to ask them when they would like to take delivery of the car. Jim and Laura, on the way home from the dealership, decided that they were not going to buy the car because they did not want to spend that money each month. Differing Viewpoints Table (30 points) – due at the end of Week 6 (4/25/21 @11:59 pm EST) (post in Week 7 discussion area)

Late papers lose 1 point per day late.

In the study of the end of life, our understanding of issues is always colored by the training and perspectives of the researchers whose work we read. Psychologists typically examine how aging influences the functioning of the individual while sociologists examine how dying and death impacts group processes. Anthropologists might seek to understand the meaning of death from a cultural perspective, while political scientists try to sort out how problems associated with dying may be addressed (or not addressed) by policy and law.

In this assignment, you will examine the interdisciplinary nature of the end of life. This assignment has three parts:u

Part 1: Using your identified specific topic (from the Bibliography Assessment) related to the end of life and use the UMUC library databases to create a table that:

represents three different perspectives (e.g. psychological, sociological, economic, political, legal, anthropological, medical, etc.)You choose what those perspectives are going to be and put them at the top of the table.

identifies research articles about your topic that represent each perspective (at least 2 for each perspective)

identifies the important findings of each study

Your complete table should look like this:

Topic: (Brief description of your topic of interest – one phrase or sentence)

Article

Perspective 2

Perspective 3

Author(s) (Year)

Author(s) (Year)

Here is a fictitious and abbreviated example using a non-related topic. Your table should include significantly more detail.

Topic: Junk food in America

Psychological

Economic

Medical

Jones & Smith (2009)

-Junk food fulfills emotional needs from early childhood

-Once addicted to junk food, people tend to remain addicted for life

-Intake of junk food is associated with higher rates of depression in adults

-Cognitive therapy appears to help reduce junk food intake

Scrooge & Marley (1975

– In this seminal work, the authors summarize the economic impact of junk food in America

-Authors observed changes in business models as a result of the junk food craze

Springsteen & Bruce (2011)

-examined changes in farming practices in the US from 1960 to 2010 associated with the growing junk food market

-found an incremental growth in the production of crops heavily used in processed food production

Benjamin & Jerry (2012)

-links obesity epidemic to the rise of junk food

-reports rates of chronic disease linked to junk food

-found direct correlation between amount of junk food and risk for Type 2 diabetes

Achey & Breakie (2011)

-links junk food to premature development in rural girls aged 8 to 10

-similar findings in pre-adolescent boys in urban settings, but not in rural boys of the same age

I’m working on a algebra practice test / quiz and need support to help me learn.

3 – Suppose receiving stations A, B, and C are located on a coordinate plane at the points (1, 4), (-3, -1), and (5, 2). Let the distances from the earthquake epicenter to these stations be 2 units, 5 units, and 4 units, respectively. Where on the coordinate plane is the epicenter located?

6- Find the function g(x)=ax+b whose graph can be obtained by translating the graph of f(x)=3x down 2 units and to the right 3 units.

8- An artist has sold a painting for $410,000. He needs some of the money in 6 months and the rest in 1 year. He can get a Treasury bond for 6 months at 2.65% and one for a year at 2.91%. His broker tells him the two investments will earn a total of $8671. How much should be invested at each rate to obtain that amount of interest? First indicate the amount to be invested at 2.65%, then indicate the amount to be invested at 2.91%. (Round your answers to the nearest whole number and do not use commas or dollar symbols in your answer.)

11- A PTA group sold homemade donuts to raise money for new computers. The donuts were sold for $7.00 per box and $0.50 for a single donut. If the PTA group raised $600 and sold 78 boxes, how many single donuts did they sell?

13- The area of a single room apartment is advertised as 171 square feet. You call the facility and are told that the length of the room is 10 feet longer than its width. Which of the following is one of the two dimensions of the room?

14- Find two numbers whose sum is 7500 and whose product is the maximum value. (Round your answer to the nearest whole number.)

20- A standard piece of notebook paper measuring 8.5 inches by 11 inches is to be made into a box with an open top by cutting equal-size squares from each corner and folding up the sides. Let x

{“version”:”1.1″,”math”:”

x

“}

represent the length of a side of each such square (in inches). Find the maximum volume of the box in cubic inches. (Round your answer to four significant digits.)

22 – The millage rate is the amount of property tax per $1000 of the taxable value of a home. For a particular county, the millage rate is 29 mil. A city within the county also imposes a flat fee of $101 per home. Which of the following models the taxable value of a home (in $1000) based on x dollars of property tax paid on the home?

28- The traditional IRA (individual retirement account) is a common tax-deferred saving plan in the United States. Eared income deposited into an IRA is not taxed in the current year, and no taxes are incurred on the interest paid in subsequent years. However, when you withdraw the money from the account after age 59.5, you pay taxes on the entire amount you withdraw.

Suppose you deposited $5000 of earned income into an IRA, you can earn an annual interest rate of 4%, and you are in a 25% tax bracket. Also, suppose that you deposit the $5000 at age 25 and withdraw it at age 60, and that interest is compounded continuously. Suppose that instead of depositing the money into an IRA, you pay taxes on the money and the annual interest. How much money will you have at age 60?

Part 1

You are planning to purchase a house that will require a mortgage of $400,000.

You find 2 mortgage offers both at the same rate of 2.75%.One is a 30-year mortgage and the other is a 20-year mortgage.

  • You know, without any computation, that the 30-year mortgage will have lower monthly payments than the 20-year mortgage since the rates are the same.A friend advised that before taking the 30-year mortgage offer, you do some mathematical calculations to see if your budget can handle the extra amount of monthly payment for the 20-year mortgage.
  • You ask your friend what advantage there is to be paying more per month on the 20-year mortgage.Your friend replies that it is all about total interest.
  • After you purchase the house, you decide to do some remodeling in the kitchen. You ask your parents if they would lend you money, but you insist on paying them interest. The agreement is that they will lend you $6000.00 at a simple interest rate of 3% per year.Once the interest amounts to $300, you agree to pay them back the $6000 plus the $300 interest.
  • Suppose that the $6000.00 was invested in a savings account that paid 2.5% interest compounded quarterly.
    • What was the Group A mean walking time? By what percent did YOU exceed or fall below the group A mean?Express your answer rounded to the nearest hundredth.
    • What was the Group B median walking time? By what percent did YOU exceed or fall below the group B median?Express your answer rounded to the nearest hundredth.
    • Let’s suppose you want to draw a pie chart that shows information for the members of each group classified by a rating based on the amount of walking time. There will be 4 categories:excellent, very good, good, needs improvement.
    • One other way to look at the data is by percentiles. What was your percentile rank in each group? Round the percentiles to the nearest whole number.

What is the difference in the monthly payment? Be sure to show all of your work.

What is the difference between the total interest paid over the term of the 30 year and 20-year mortgage? Be sure to show all of your work.

After how many months will you have to pay them back? Be sure to show all of your work.

Why is it important for trainers and trainees to establish rapport with each other before a training session?

Student 1(Aushaya)

As discussed in the earlier discussions there are many factors that a manager considers to develop a training sessions. It takes up time, effort and incurs costs to the business. So, it is in the best interest of the business and the managers that the training session is successful through effective learning. One crucial factor for effective learning is that both trainee and trainers have a rapport with each other. Establishing a rapport between the two parties will ensure a proper working and learning environment where by both parties can understand each other effectively. It ensures that there is good two way communication between the two which allows them to freely ask, learn and clear out any doubts or questions about the training. Without a rapport, the trainee might not be motivated to learn and may lose focus which means that they might not retain much from the training. This in end will require the organization to re-train the employees which will add up to the costs and also undermine the time and effort that the managers have given.

When I was working as a RJ, we had a training about the new equipment that the company just bought. This equipment was the latest track-master RJ set which would allow us to edit sound clips on the fly, call and receive multiple phone calls and also host multiple mics at once. Before this, we used to have a station master who would help with all these technical tasks. But after this equipment, it would basically eliminate his role. He wasn’t that happy about it. So during the training, his attitude towards the trainer was not very professional. This simply created an environment of negativity and the training session was not much fruitful than expected. Our station manager had to send us to separated training sessions for us to learn about the same equipment.

Student 2-Robert

Good rapport helps to establish the necessary positive climate needed for a successful training session, which in turn facilitates effective learning. The environment can align the goals and commitment of both the trainer and trainee into a common, productive bond. Also, by establishing rapport with the trainees, the trainer creates a better environment to influence, learn and teach, in a comfortable setting where trainees may be more likely to accept the trainer’s ideas, to share information, and to create opportunities together.

When establishing rapport, it’s very important for a trainer to research their audience. An audience analysis helps the trainer determine learning objectives for the curriculum by discovering what participants know and what they still need to learn. It will also uncover any resistance to the training, which allows the trainer to take steps to mitigate that resistance within the training design.

This analysis is also used in identifying audience specifics and adapting speech to their interests, level of understanding, attitudes, and beliefs. Taking an audience-centered approach is important because a speaker’s effectiveness will be improved if the presentation is created and delivered in an appropriate manner.

Since you have been taking business law, you have read and understand the elements of a contract and the defenses to a contract. Therefore, although you are not a lawyer, you provide some basic advice from what you’ve learned in your business law class.

ASSIGNMENT: In three to five (3-5) pages, advise Jim and Laura based on the above facts as presented and the material covered in the lessons. In your paper, be sure to address the following:

  1. Define the elements of a legal contract using examples from the scenario where applicable.
  2. Decide whether or not there was a contract for the purchase of the automobile.
  3. Identify the facts from the scenario which support your decision on whether or not a contract exists for the purchase of the automobile.
  4. Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.

In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the touchstone.

A. Assignment Guidelines

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

Touchstones are projects that illustrate your comprehension of the course material, help you refine skills, and demonstrate application of knowledge. You can work on a Touchstone anytime, but you can’t submit it until you have completed the unit’s Challenges. Once you’ve submitted a Touchstone, it will be graded and counted toward your final course score.

Touchstone 4: Revise an Argumentative Research Essay

undefined

As this assignment builds on Touchstone 3.2: Draft an Argumentative Research Essay, that Touchstone must be graded before you can submit your final research essay

A. Final Draft Guidelines

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

❒ Have your edits and revisions addressed the feedback provided by your evaluator?

2. Cohesion and Source Integration

❒ Is the information presented in a logical order that is easy for the reader to follow?
❒ Have you included smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs?
❒ Have you introduced your sources clearly and in a way that demonstrates their validity to the reader?

I’m studying for my Humanities class and need an explanation.

Assignment 3: Response to Union Organizing Campaign

You are the Employee Relations Specialist for a national retail company with locations across the United States. The nearly 500 company employees are diverse in terms of age and demographic differences. Your primary work location is Southeast Pennsylvania. Recently, the employees in the mid-Atlantic region, managed by Kristopher Kolumbus, have expressed dissatisfaction with the work environment. There are approximately 125 employees in the mid-Atlantic region. Their specific concerns include receiving small pay raises for the past 2 – 3 years, limited employee benefits, lack of career mobility and progression, and heightened security controls implemented due to theft concerns. There has been recent talk among the employees about the possibility of unionization, and some workers have begun exploring options such as United Food & Commercial Workers International Union and the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union. Before either of these unions will send an organizer to the organization, it wants to be sure that sufficient employees will back union representation. Some employees have started company-wide communication to increase interest in unionization.

As the Employee Relations Specialist, it is your responsibility to ensure that supervisors and managers follow the rules regarding a union organizing campaign. In response to this potential campaign, you decide to take some initial actions and prepare several documents to share with your boss, the Director of Human Resources:

Each document must be double-space, Times New Roman font 12, and APA format. Paper must be in narrative format, not bullets. [in word document not pdf]

You must use the underlined headings below as separate discussion paragraphs in your paper. In other words, you will have at least 4 separate paragraphs with headings in the order provided below.

  • A summary email to the Director of Human Resources describing the issues and what actions you are taking (which must include the below items)
  • A one-page memo to all managers and supervisors indicating what they can and cannot do during any union organizing effort.
  • An email to your human resource colleagues about actions the HR team should consider in response to some of the concerns raised by the Mid-Atlantic Region employees
  • An outline for a meeting to be held between Human Resources and the organization’s leadership team regarding the organizing effort.

Case Study Project

(first draft and revised draft)

Overview

For this final project you will continue with the social issue that you selected (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth) and you will write an essay where you discuss your perspective. You will use the ideas and information from the summary-response and the quote log to write your case study. You will submit a first draft and a revised draft of this assignment.

Content

Describe a “real life” instance of your selected social issue in a professional or a personal setting.

Discuss your perspective on your selected social issue, including the reasons for your viewpoint.

Discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue.

Demonstrate that you are really thinking about your issue—don’t settle for easy answers, don’t pretend that conflicting evidence doesn’t exist, and don’t feel that you have to take an either-or position.

Discuss the complexities of your selected social issue. For example, do not just conclude that using academic language is always good, or that government surveillance is always bad, or that wealth automatically leads to health. Think about the intricacies of these issues and how they play out in everyday life.

Organization

Include an introductory paragraph, where you clearly outline a “real-life” instance of your social issue and you give a thesis statement that indicates your perspective (see Part 2: Writing Your Introduction for an example).

Include three body paragraphs where you include details, examples, and quotes from at least three of the course readings to help you develop and support your key points (see Part 3: Writing Your Body Paragraphs. for an example).

Include one body paragraph where you discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue (see Part 3: Writing Your Body Paragraphs. for an example).

End your essay with a concluding paragraph where you restate your thesis, summarize your key points, and leave the reader with the “so what?” ( see Part 4: Writing Your Conclusion for an example).

Grammar and Mechanics

Your paper should be written according to the standards for academic writing, with attention to the following:

punctuation: this includes things such as use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.

word-level accuracy: this includes things such as capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.

sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.

Take time to proofread after you’ve written your essay. Think about your own writing habits you might want to change (like using “text-speak” or sentence fragments) and watch out for those. Reading your paper aloud is a good way to catch any mistakes.

Sources and Documentation

You are required to use three sources for this assignment. Your sources should be selected from the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth).

Your paper should use APA-style documentation for in-text citations. You do not need to complete a reference page.

Format and Length

Your paper should include a header consisting of your name and the assignment name and a title tailored to your topic. (See example below.)

Your paper should be typed, double-spaced and in 12-point font.

Your final product should be a minimum of six paragraphs (about 900-1100 words) in length. However, the quality of the content of this essay is most important. Be sure to fully answer the prompt.

Sample Header and Title for Assignment Submissions

Kim Lee (student’s name)

Case Study Project, first draft (assignment name)

Education Doesn’t Mean Empowerment (title)

Sample Case Study Project

Be sure to review this Sample Case Study before you begin. The student sample includes notes to help with connections to key aspects of the assignment.

Due Date and Grade Percentage

The first draft of this project is due by the end of Week 6. The first draft is ungraded, but you will receive valuable feedback from your instructor.

The revised draft is due by the end of Week 8. The revised draft of this project is worth 30% of your final course grade.

Connection to other Course Assignments

This is the culminating assignment, where you will tie together all of the information and ideas from the course.

All of the reading, writing, thinking, and discussing that you have done over the past several weeks have led up to this assignment.

An external audit of the company’s financial operations has just been completed. Last week, an “early look” copy of the audit was sent to the CFO with a request for a formal written response for each of the findings. Some of the problem areas were known to the CFO’s staff and they were already working on the required responses. But, there is one set of findings that came as a complete surprise — Shadow IT — the unauthorized / unapproved use of cashless payment technologies by certain locations and offices within the company. These technologies included:

1. Micro payments using a payment card issued by guest services to hotel guests and via unattended vending machines to visitors. These payment cards are loaded with a cash value deposited to the card’s account via a credit card charge. Guest services also credits some of these payment card accounts with “reward dollars” for guests who belong to the hotel’s affinity program. The payment cards are used at service locations which do not have a cashier station. e.g. game arcade, self-service laundry or sales kiosk, etc. The payments are processed by a third party service provider which then uses an electronic funds transfer to pay the hotel its share of the income.

2. Mobile Payments for services booked through the concierge desk with an authorized but independent provider (not a hotel employee). These services include: private lessons with a tennis or golf pro, childcare, tours and tour guides, interpreters, etc. These payments are made by cell phone either as a mobile payment using a contactless payment system such as Apple Pay or by swiping a credit card through a magnetic stripe reader connected to the provider’s cell phone. The payment accounts which receive the guests’ payments are connected to the hotel’s merchant card accounts. The hotel pays the providers monthly via electronic deposit and issues an IRS Form 1099 to record the income.

The CFO must make a presentation to the IT Governance board about these payment systems as a first step towards either getting approval for continued use or issuing a “cease and desist” directive to force the rogue offices and locations to stop using the unapproved payment systems. The presentation must include information about known or suspected compliance issues for PCI-DSS. The IT Governance board has previously asked project sponsors for information about potential privacy and security issues.

Due to the size and complexity of the problem, the CFO has split the available staff into two teams. Team #1 will focus on the micro payment cards. Team #2 will focus on the mobile payment systems. You have been asked to join one of these two teams and assist with their research. (Note: you *must* pick one and only one of the two technologies to focus on for your discussion paper this week.)

Your team leader has asked you to read the provided background information (see the Week 7 readings) and then put together a 2 page summary of the important points from your readings. You have also been asked to help identify and describe / explain 5 or more privacy and security issues that could arise in conjunction with the use of the technology being studied by your team. Remember to keep your focus on the financial aspects of the technology implementation since you are contributing to the CFO’s effort. (Financial aspects include how payments are made, what types of information are exchanged and with whom, how that information is protected, etc.)

The chief technology officer (CTO) has indicated that your organization has been requested by the National Security Council (NSC) to comment on the upcoming National Cybersecurity Strategy. The NSC has asked for specific recommendations as it relates to the next cybersecurity strategy, private/public partnerships, and comments on how specific technologies should be incorporated into the assessment.

The CTO has asked you to collaborate with your team to provide the organizational input.

You will be collaborating with your previously assigned team on this assignment. It is up to the team members to decide how they will plan, meet, discuss, and complete the six sections of the paper. Remember, if a member fails to complete his or her part of the work, the team is still responsible for all sections. You will also complete a peer review for yourself and for each member of the team. The peer feedback will be incorporated into each team member’s assignment grade.

As a group, use the Cybersecurity Strategy, Law, and Policy Team Assignment Resources to write your paper, which should cover the following topics:

Part 2: Public/Private Partnerships

  • After reading the Cybersecurity Act of 2015, address the private/public partnership with the DHS National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC), arguably the most important aspect of the act. The Cybersecurity Act of 2015 allows for private and public sharing of cybersecurity threat information.
    • What should the DHS NCCIC (public) share with private sector organizations? What type of threat information would enable private organizations to better secure their networks?
    • On the flip side, what should private organizations share with the NCCIC? As it is written, private organization sharing is completely voluntary. Should this be mandatory? If so, what are the implications to the customers’ private data?
    • The government is not allowed to collect data on citizens. How should the act be updated to make it better and more value-added for the public-private partnership in regards to cybersecurity?

The News Report asked you to think like a journalist or a consumer of the news. Now, the Research Component asks you to think like a Women’s Studies’ scholar: How does the information reported in the news article connect to scholarly research in the field? What do scholars already know that can deepen our understanding of the information reported in the article?

This assignment will also provide an orientation to the interdisciplinary scholarly resources available for Women’s Studies’ students and scholars.

First (1), visit the Research Guide for Women’s Studies at the UMGC Library. Spend some time exploring the available resources.

To access the Research Guide for Women’s Studies

Click on “Resources” > “Library” from inside the LEO Classroom

Click on “Research Guides” in the tabs above the search box on the library search page

Click on “Select a Guide” and scroll down to “Research Guide for Women’s Studies”

Second (2), using any of the databases or eresources available in the Research Guide, research some aspect of your news article. You should be looking for scholarly resources. If the first database or set of resources returns few options or only news articles and not scholarly articles, choose another database. You could focus on the main topic of the article (such as the gender wage gap, or women in the military), on a specific person discussed in the article (such as an activist, or a politician), or on a location discussed in the article (such as women in the Midwest, or women in Nigeria), or on a related idea (such as the history of cosmetics, or female-centered religions). Remember to maintain a focus on a topic of interest to Women’s Studies.

Third (3), choose two of the scholarly resources you discover, and write an annotated bibliography of 500-800 words as described here. Chosen resources should be no more than 10 years old.

If you are unsure how to determine if a given resource is “scholarly” or not, here is a guide to evaluating resources: https://sites.umgc.edu/library/libhow/articles.cfm

If you need help formatting an Annotated Bibliography, here are two good resources:

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography at the UMGC Library [note that this assignment asks you to include both types of annotations described here for each entry]

Annotated Bibliography Samples at the Purdue OWL

Your annotated bibliography should include

An introduction: Explain which topic you chose to explore and why, and how you used the Research Guide to find scholarly work on that topic. Remember to explicitly state the connection to the news article you chose for the News Report.

Two annotated bibliographic references. Each of these should include:

The full citation, properly cited in APA 7 Style. Note that different types of publications (journal articles, encyclopedia entries, ebooks) will require different citation styles.

A 1-paragraph summary of the findings of the research. You should actually read both resources you present. This summary should be in your own words. Do not copy from the summary or abstract that appears in the online library reference listing.

A 1-2 paragraph evaluation of the resource. How does the news article confirm, complicate, illustrate, or otherwise relate to the news article? How does it deepen your understanding of the same subject as covered in the news article?

Writing Guidelines:

Part 2 of the Current Topic Project: Scholarly Research should demonstrate that you

can identify key subjects in a news article of interest to Women’s Studies scholars.

know how to find and navigate the Research Guide for Women’s Studies at the UMGC Library.

can locate and understand scholarly resources.

can write an organized, clear, detailed, and properly cited annotated bibliography.

Use APA Style to format the paper and all citations.

Here are some links to resources which cover the APA format:

Citation Guides for APA styles at the UMGC Library

While I am happy to answer questions about the assignment, I encourage you to make use of UMGC’s Effective Writing Center if you’d like detailed writing help or another set of eyes to look at your paper before you turn it in. The EWC will require a few days to review a draft, so you will need to finish the paper early if you want to submit it to them.

If you quote, paraphrase, or summarize your news article, or any other sources in addition to the two listed in your annotated bibliography, remember to cite them both in the text and in a References list at the end of the assignment.

There is a sample Scholarly Research paper attached to this assignment. It is not a perfect paper, but it is formatted correctly and contains all of the required elements. This sample is for informational use only. Your paper should be entirely your original work, even if on the same or a similar topic.

In Week 4, you developed a plan for how to inform employees and managers about a new policy. For this discussion, you must develop a new and more comprehensive communications strategy which responds to an audit finding that the previous Communications Strategy was not sufficient and had contributed to a controls failure.

A recent internal audit uncovered a lack of knowledge on the part of employees and included a finding that this lack of knowledge contributed to a compliance failure for IT security controls related to privacy and data security. The auditors recommended that the company needed to improve its communication of policy changes and revisions to both employees and managers. The auditors also noted that Red Clay Renovations has been experiencing a great deal of change especially with respect to how the company protects information from unauthorized disclosures, including theft of data by cyber criminals.  The company agreed with the finding and in its response noted that it has developed a substantial number of new and revised policies, plans, and guidance procedures to help manage the associated risks but that it could improve internal communications about those changes. Now, the company needs to fix the “communications” problem. The CISO has asked you to help develop a communication strategy that can be used to explain the cybersecurity and privacy related policies to a non-technical workforce.

Your Task: Prepare a briefing that identifies your top 5 strategies and explains why you chose each one. Provide examples of the types of policies which need to be communicated to the workforce (use your work for Projects 1, 2, & 3 and your weekly discussion papers). To get started, review the communications strategy that you developed for the Week 4 discussion. Then consult the resources (listed below) which were provided by the company’s Human Resources office.

Provide in-text citations and references for 3 or more authoritative sources. Put the reference list at the end of your posting. Make sure you use the discussion rubric as well as the above instructions to ensure you include all the required elements in your response.

For this assignment, you will search for five websites that are acceptable for use in a college-level history research paper. UMGC library databases (for example JSTOR or other journal databases), Wikipedia, History.com or any other encyclopedia or wiki-type site like about.com are NOT acceptable, sites that require a subscription are additionally NOT acceptable. Write a paragraph for each website in which you describe the contents of each website in detail, and why you think the site is acceptable for use in an academic research paper, using the information you collected from your evaluation of the site.

Complete the following for your annotated webliography:

Provide a complete citation (as you would include it in your bibliography) for the site, including the URL and your date of access. Note that the required style for this class is Chicago Manual of Style.

For an example of what elements to include in your citation, go to https://sites.umgc.edu/library/libhow/chicago_examples.cfm and click on Web Sites.  You can also click on the Chicago Style Guide Resources module under the Table of Contents to find examples of how to properly cite websites using the Chicago Manual of Style.

Use the evaluation criteria provided by UMGC Information and Library Services https://www.umgc.edu/current-students/learning-resources/writing-center/writing-resources/evaluating-sources.cfm to determine if the site is appropriate for college-level academic research (i.e. a college-level history research paper).

For guidance, watch the 13 minute Crash Course video on Lateral Reading, which is the ability to cross check a website’s credibility as you are looking for information: https://youtu.be/GoQG6Tin-1E

If you would like a transcript, click on the three horizontal dots under the video, and select Open Transcript. The transcript will open to the right of the video.

Sometimes people confuse a web address with being the same as a website. This is not the case. Articles from journals or websites are NOT websites.  Make sure you are clear as to what a website is. For example, msn.com, yahoo.com, or bbc.com are websites. Any article contained within them are not websites.

If your topic is contained within a part of the website then you must still evaluate the website as a whole for its suitability for use in a college level history research paper.  You will find a sample Annotated Webliography in the module labeled “Sample Assignments.”  Do not use the websites from the sample assignment.

I’m trying to learn for my Statistics class and I’m stuck. Can you help?

1. Normal Distribution: Operations and production managers often use the normal distribution as a probability model to forecast demand in order to determine inventory levels, manage the supply chain, control production and service processes, and perform quality assurance checks on products and services.  The information gained from such statistical analyses help managers optimize resource allocation and reduce process time, which in turn often improves profit margins and customer satisfaction.

Based on your understanding of the characteristics of the normal distribution, examine the chart below.  Process A standard deviation is .9, Process B standard deviation is 1.4, and the mean of both processes is 12.  Contribute to our discussion by posting a response to ONE of the questions below.

  1. Do either of the processes fit a normal distribution?  Why or why not?
  2. Which of the processes shows more variation?  What does this mean practically?
  3. If the product specification quality limits were 12 +/- 3, which of the processes more consistently meets specification? Explain why.
  4. If the product specification quality limits were changed to 12 +/- 6, is quality loosening or tightening?  Which process would benefit the most from this change?
  5. Are there processes at your place of employ that you believe follow a normal distribution?  If so, describe one.  Why do you believe it is normal?

2. Hang Up and Drive : Check out this snippet from Family Circle magazine (January, 2009, Liz Plosser):

Motorists who talk on a cell phone while driving are 9% slower to hit the brakes, 19% slower to resume normal speed after braking and four times more likely to crash.

Interesting, eh? Need more information? Sorry, that’s all the information this article provided. So, what can we conclude? How reliable are these results? Can you believe what the author tells you? Why or why not?

Pretend you’re a manager for one of the major cell phone service providers in the U.S. You’ve been asked by a major news magazine to speak to these “accusations.” What would you say? Use your knowledge of “statistics for managers” to level some well-founded criticisms of the conclusions above.

Careful! We cannot use personal opinions to battle statistics like these! Instead, you must explain why the numbers reported in Family Circle may, or may not, accurately represent the population of U.S. drivers. There are 100 possible answers to this conference topic.

You need only provide a single idea, to get the conversation rolling. Leave some material for others to contribute. Be sure that your contribution explicitly references what we’ve read and practiced in the class so far.  It is your classmates’ job to support or refute what you’ve said.

3. Confidence Intervals at the Workplace

Web site:

Case scenario.

  • At the workplace, you are the research team leader.
  • The Boss wants your team to collect data to establish a confidence interval for a situation at work.
  • In 6-sentences or more, explain how confidence interval procedure can be applied at the workplace for the situation.
